My son is 3.5 and this is the first Charlie the Ranch Dog book I've bought. I picked this one because I am expecting and have picked a few books on babies in general so he understands more about how babies need special care. This has nothing to do with having baby siblings, of course, but my son loves it. He was especially captivated by the illustrations. Another reviewer mentioned there were pages without words and I think this was done for artistic license. I didn't find it disruptive. I point to each of the scenes on those pages and we talk about what is happening in those scenes. I will definitely check out more Charlie the Ranch Dog books in the future.

I am usually a fan of the "Charlie" books, but not this one and here's why. I got towards the end of the book, only to find two pages with no words. The previous page showed a fed-up Charlie howling at the calf, and then when the words pick up again, Charlie is being rewarded with attention and belly rubs! Sorry, that is NOT the message I want my child to get from this book - you make a fuss because you are upset and you get rewarded? I thought for sure that I missed something and that those two pages accidently didn't have words, because there had to be a better resolution on those two pages, but it appears not to be the case. I was hoping this would end more similarly to "Where's the Bacon?" Very disappointed with this book in the series.

What can I say.....anything Ree Drummond does is perfect. I have purchased several of her Charlie books for my new granddaughter who's daddy works on the family ranch. They are perfect and this one was especially perfect because it was calving season at the ranch! I will continue to purchase these books for my granddaughter through the years!

My grandkids (and I) love the Charlie books. This book was a disappointment. When I received it and read it I thought it was missing pages. The story didn't make much sense on the last couple of pages. I went to the bookstore to check and, yep, they're book was the same. I gave it to my granddaughter and when her dad read it the first time, he was also confused and went back through the book, certain there were pages missing.

Very disappointed in this book. The story line doesn't coincide with the cover showing Charlie and the calf looking like buddies or like possibly Charlie was providing some warmth and comfort to the little calf. I suppose the events in the book more accurately show how a dog's needs might be secondary to taking care of a newborn that needed some extra care, but not a particularly compelling story for a child (or an adult). Quite boring, actually.. Neither my child nor I found the story very engaging----Charlie gets ignored for a day and then things are back to normal for him just didn't resonate.

What a fun story and sweet book! Actually, my son suggested we buy it for our 2-year-old grandson. When I asked, "are you trying to tell us something," he responded, "No, he just likes Charlie and farm animals." So, when we were able to visit and give it to our grandson for his birthday, we were also surprised with the news of another grandbaby to arrive, which would be about ten months after we bought the book. So listen up, grandparent wannebe's: this book may be your answer. Ha, that's a joke, but we sure enjoyed the laughter it's brought. Oh, and thank-you, Ree Drummond, for another wonderful Charlie story!

"Charlie and the New Baby" is just as remarkable as all the "Charlie" books before it. His antics and remarks keep the child's attention along with the fantastic illustrations! It's a book your child will ask to be read to them over and over. Along with that, there is a great recipe that is presented at the end of the book, which will let your child experience even more "Charlie" time! I just love this book and your child will too!

My 2 year old granddaughter loves these books. We watch the Pioneer Woman and she loves to see Charlie and Walter and all the animals. We had a basset hound too so she can relate. These stories are so charming. She is always asking me to "read Charlie the Ranch Dog stories."

Introduction"The present chasm between generations has been brought about almost entirely by a change in the concept of truth" (25). A secular reform is happening in our day and many Christians appear to be sideswiped by the velocity of change that is occurring. In The God Who is There, Francis Schaeffer unravels the postmodern plague of our day with wisdom, clarity, and a genuine love for unbelievers. Schaeffer argues that a change in the "concept of truth" has crept into the world with Christians unaware. His message to Christians: repent from your ignorance and begin reaching modern man with the Gospel by showing them the logic of their own fatal conclusions.SummaryIn section one, Schaeffer argues that society once viewed the world through the lens of antithesis. (That is, if something is true then its opposite must be not true.) Yet, through the influence of modern philosophy, man lost an understanding of absolutes. Thus, by this flaw in reason, man can no longer classify truth from non-truth. Once man has lost the absolute of a God "who is there," the conclusions of their worldview slip below the realm of romanticism and into a realm of despair. He classifies the dividing line between these two realms the "line of despair" (28). Next, the author steps back into history and shows specific examples of how modern philosophy started this loss of absolute meaning and, consequently, began to trickle down into other aspects of society like art, music, and the general culture (28). In section two, the author shifts scenes and turns to modern theology and argues that that too has lost absolutes. The author begins by stating that German theologians began to play with the concept of antitheses and ended up denying "everything miraculous and supernatural" (72). Despite their theological denials, they continued to search for a historical Jesus as they sought to separate Christ's divinity from mere historical facts. Needless to say, they failed. At this point, the author claims, they had two options. They could have returned to their presuppositions and admitted that a historical Christ cannot be separated from his divinity, or abandoned religion and embraced nihilism. Instead, the author says, they abandoned both options and took after modern philosophy by rejecting absolutes or antithesis (73). From here, the author argues, liberal theology ultimately became mysticism. While theology was once founded on absolute premises, it had now been reduced to illusions. Though modern theology likewise uses terms such as "god," "Christ," and "love," the meaning behind these terms are mystical illusions in that their definitions are used as abstract concepts with no absolute meaning. Finally, the author ends this section by predicting the future outcome of "new theology". The author argues that modern theology naturally led to the conclusion of faith being irrational in every sense. Thus modern theology gave birth to two forms of "new theology" in an effort to bridge the gap between faith and rationality: Christian atheism and a secular notion of pantheism (104,105). In section three, Francis Schaeffer digs deeper into the new theology and highlights the immense differences between it and biblical Christianity. He begins by arguing that biblical Christianity grounds man's personality to the personality of God. New theology on the other hand, has no basis for a God who is there--they can only reduce the origin of personality to impersonal matter. Second, Schaeffer argues that biblical Christianity has a non-contradictory basis for knowledge because God created man with the capacity to learn, He has spoken to His creation, and He has exemplified love through His relationship within the Trinity. New theology on the other hand, has no basis by which to answer any of these because of their lack of absolutes. Third, the author looks to the problem of evil and suffering. While new theology brushes this problem off and claims that "man has always been fallen man," it fails to provide an answer and instead gives no adequate basis by which to solve this problem (128). In contrast, biblical Christianity not only provides an answer, but a solution as well. Mankind experiences evil and suffering because of their moral rebellion against a personal God. Despite this cosmic transgression, God did not abandon mankind; instead, he sent his Son as a substitutionary sacrifice for those would repent of their sins and trust in Him. Through the Gospel, God is reversing the effects of the fall. In section four, Schaeffer moves forward and begins to address Christians on how to evangelize to modern man. He argues that unless Christians lovingly confront modern men with the inconsistent conclusions of their presuppositions, efforts to share the Gospel may be inadequate; either modern man will not see their need for the Gospel or our words will become nothing more than "evangelical cliché" to them (148). Next, after Christians find the "tension point" and expose modern man's inconsistencies, they will either see their need for the Gospel or harden their hearts even more (160). In section five, Schaeffer reinforces the need for modern man to the see the lack of inconsistencies of their conclusions. He begins by stating that apologetics must not be limited to heartless scholarly work with no substance in the real world. Instead, apologetics must be the aim of every Christian. The Gospel, the author says, must be communicated in such a way that modern man can understand. He then ends this section by speaking of the nature of reality. Truth, he says, does not ultimately rest on "orthodoxy," "creeds," or even the "Scriptures" (177). Rather, he explains, they "are important because God is there" "that is the only reason they have their importance" (177). Without God, we have nothing. Finally, in section six, Schaeffer ends his book by urging other Christians to live consistently with the Christian faith. Though a Christian comes to faith alone, the author says, he is not called to live the Christian life alone. Instead, Christians are to grow under the unity of a local church. This, he says, is one of the greatest ways unbelievers can see and experience the love of Christians. Finally, he argues that every aspect of a Christian's life must be marked by the Gospel. The very core of their existence must always point to the personal God who is there and who is not silent.Critical EvaluationAs this book so evidently shows, unless a Christian can clearly understand the assumptions and worldviews of modern men, he will be utterly impotent to share the Christian faith. In The God Who is There, Francis Schaeffer offers a thoughtful, sobering, and eye-opening book that analyses how modern men have sunk below the "line of despair" and what Christians must do to present the Gospel in such a way that they can understand.The church is in dire need of reading The God Who is There. Rare is the Christian man who is well versed in philosophy and can properly analyze it through the Christian worldview. Francis Schaeffer is not only one of these men--he is a teacher to them. Indeed, while modern man continues to plunge down the line of despair, Christians seem to be standing over the chasm--completely ignorant to how secularists actually view the world. The church needs more men like him to analyze the secular culture. This book is applicable to scholars and laymen alike. Though there is a plethora of citations concerning terminology and history, the book is neither too analytical nor too simple for anyone not to read it. With the help of twenty one very short chapters and an extensive table of contents, the reader is able to track along with the author's logical reasoning and the direction of his thought. Additionally, the author has included many diagrams throughout his book to help his reader view his ideas in picture form. Arguably, the "line of despair" illustration must be one of the greatest keys to understanding our culture (28). Through this important concept, Schaeffer lays down the foundation for the entire book and draws its inferences very clearly. Namely, man has lost his perception of reality and embraced subjective truth. Though this may be such a simple concept, it is foundationally important to understand that many people wrongfully view this world with ungrounded romanticism. They have no ground for their reasoning. Schaeffer not only corrects modern society, but the church as well. The inferences drawn from his arguments underline a major error among Evangelicals; they are merely mowing the surface level weeds, not reaching in and ripping out the root of the issue. Hot subject topics like homosexuality, gay marriage, sexual immorality, and abortion are all clear violations against what God has declared in Scripture. Yet, if these things (as terrible as they are) are fought against without a clear teaching of the underlying worldview, the Christian is left beating the air. As Schaeffer said, we must be willing to define a word at length so that our speech may not be mere "connotation words" (148).The author is characterized by a rare conviction of truth that is absent from our world today. Armed with Scripture, Schaffer loves people enough to confront their inconsistencies. He is not afraid. He even claims that one of his former students (now a Christian) attempted to commit suicide after he led her to see the outcome of her conclusions. Even if she would have killed herself, he says, he "would have begun the same way with the next person who came" (161). Additionally, Schaeffer possesses a genuine love for lost souls. Concerning the depth of man's despair, Schaeffer says, "Dare we laugh at such things?" and "These men are dying while they live; yet where is our compassion for them? There is nothing more ugly than a Christian orthodoxy without understanding or without compassion" (54). A little more intellectual than I expected, but well worth it. It's more than OK to be a Christian who thinks. It's necessary. Faith rests on truth. There in no such thing as faith in faith.

I read this book back in 1979 prior to my first trip to Europe. While my brother and I backpacked our way across the continent we stopped at L`Abri Switzerland where Schaeffer wrote, listened and spoke. Prior to traveling our way up the mountains to Huemoz we stopped at several major museums across Europe to include the Louvre, Paris. In every major and minor gallery we saw the dynamics in intellectual thought ingrained into the works of master painters and how they communicated their worldview, or hoped to answer the foundational questions of rational meaning, truth, humanity, and existence. Now after retiring as an Infantryman of 23 years from the U.S. Army, surviving two wars, and completing a degree in history, I decided to pick up this amazing piece of profound intellectual and academic truth to reopen my arterial pedagogy, to question again...why? Schaffer's book "The God who is There," even today, challenges the secular progressive norms of mindless rationalism, impersonal science, contemporary `faith traditions' and atheist dogma to, and if you are an honest thinking person, articulately communicate from a historical perspective the basis of logic, truth, and reality. Schaeffer blends a coherent voice, not exhaustive, to speak to the unread as well as a basis for the scholarly. The book quantitatively clarifies the existential. The book speaks to the atheist universal (limited) worldview which cannot answer the thinking person's being, and thus affectionately paints an evolutionary mosaic of meaningless, cold science, arbitrary logic in dialectics, calculates pragmatic bias evidence, existential escapism and delusional humanistic pixie dust to gratify the impersonal in order to keep the animal herd controllable. Unfortunately, cold science is trying to fill the chasm by Neuro Socialscientists who are revisioning their definitions to give an emotional blanket, a Noble lie, to the meaningless human existence. And that is the despairing truth. I have returned to several of the museums in Europe to see the art work captioned in this book, to include the Louvre, to see the historical movement of religion, political, philosophy, and art. I have reread a couple of Kierkegaard's old books to confirm information. Anyone who doesn't find this book intellectually challenging, academically compelling, and a rationally moving module, well then there is a deep chasm of disconnect and dysfunction in honest self polemic, and quite frankly, ignorance in self. As LINKIN Park remorsefully sings; "Leave Out all the Rest," which screams of hopelessness, meaningless finality, and existential wishful memory, so too the atheist anthem sings into the cosmic abyss to hide the truth of their real despair. There are no tidy explanations to the expanded human narrative and tracing the historical path of how we, as individuals, came to limited rational understanding. However "The God Who Is There," who has created all things, and who has spoken, will rationally answer the historical `open system' in which we live. I highly recomend reading all of Schaeffers books.

This book is a longer version of Curacao Travel Adventures, by Lynn Sullivan, obviously also containing Aruba and Bonaire. Don't buy both. I would also not recommend the kindle version. While it is attractive to not have to take a lot of books with you, this is not an easy guide to use on kindle. The table of contents does not give page numbers. It is more of a graph of what is in the book. Neither is a great guide, but there really aren't many guide to Curacao. Do chack out the Beach Book, Curacao edition by Bret Sigillo. It is great.

Not very helpful in making plans, because it is very out of date. But it had some interesting history and geographical information. Can't remember if the publish date was given, but that is certainly something I will look for in future purchases.

I am planning a trip to Bonaire and picked up this book. After visiting all of the local book stores and not finding any books specifically about Bonaire, I thought I better check Amazon. I was concerned that this book might focus on the more populated islands only. However I was pleased to find that it dedicates about 1/3 of the book to each island. While it has the usual reviews on hotels & restaurants, it also has some interesting coverage of local history and driving tours. I was also pleased to find some coverage of scuba diving sites including maps locating the dive sites and skill ratings for each.If you need info on the ABC's, I suggest you get this book.

I have just returned from Curacao. I found this book to be a complete dud. The only thing it helped me with were the guide to beaches up on the northern part of the island. It said nothing about what is one of the best resorts in the Caribbean, Kura Hulanda and it's Slave Museum. Chech out Kula Hulanda on the web. This book also said nothing about a departure tax at the airport while it seems to address alot of fluff.You would do better with other guide books. I have not been to Aruba or Bonaire so I can't say if the book is better for those two islands but I would bet not.S Klebe

Warren Buffet has said he never invests in anything he doesn't understand. If it can't easily be explained by someone, then it is best to keep moving. That's how I feel about cryptocurrencies after reading this book - it seems like a really glossed over explanation. While the author does issue warnings about the risks involved in owning and investing in cryptocurrencies, it seemed to me that she was slanting things in favor of making investments and also touting her own firm, using this book as a vehicle to advertise herself. Based on this book, cryptocurrencies are the latest and greatest, a big advancement in currency and is the wave of the future. Perhaps, but the shortfalls and risks right now leave much to be desired before it replaces our current monetary system. If you are considering making any sort of significant investment in a cryptocurrency, my suggestion is to read more reference materials on the subject to get a better handle on how the system works and even so, realize that "investing" is really nothing more than gambling.At this time how many people do you know who actually use Bitcoin or any of the other thousands of cryptocurrencies that have been introduced since that one? I don't know of a single person who has used it for a buy/sell transaction and only one who purchased it a long time ago out of curiosity. As I said above, I would suggest further reading before putting your own finances on the line as this book really does not explain anything in enough depth to give the reader sufficient understanding - unless you're a real gambler and this is just another way to do it.

Typical of Dummies books (and that's a compliment), this is a cohesive collection of most everything that I needed to know about cryptocurrencies.

On Her Father’s Grave by Kendra Elliot is a great start to the Rogue River series. Kendra is writing two of the four books and Melinda Leigh is writing the other two. On Her Father’s Grave is an excellent start to the series. I do not know why some books just connect with a reader and you cannot read enough of the book, I just know that this was one of those books for me. I could not read it fast enough or enjoyed it more.Stevie Taylor returns to Solitude, Oregon, after her father’s death. She realizes how much she has missed being around her family and her hometown. She is hired as a patrol officer in the department where her father was the chief. He has been replaced by Zane Duncan, who is not from Solitude. But he is well liked by Stevie’s family and her deceased father felt like Zane was one of his sons. Will Stevie and Zane be able to work together or will Stevie dislike Zane for trying to replace her father?The two of them must work together to solve the mystery of why a teenager dies of no apparent cause. There is an unknown substance found in the dead teenager’s system. When another teenager dies under similar circumstances with the same substance found, Stevie and Zane are afraid there is a big drug problem facing them. They need to find out what the new drug is and who is supplying it to the teenagers, before any other teens die.The hometown setting and the family closeness make this book an exceptional read. The characters are well developed and well rounded. They are likable and people you would like to have as a friend. There is a relationship beginning to build between Stevie and Zane and I cannot wait to see where it leads. Some of the family members are behaving oddly and I want to find out the reason behind it.The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. I was hooked from the first page, wanting to learn more about each of the characters. The mystery of how the teen died and who the drug supplier is was carried on until the end. Since this is the first in a four book novella series, these questions, and others are not yet answered but there is a good foundation for the rest of the books. My only complaint about the books is that it is a novella. I wanted this book to be a full length novel because it was so good. I knew before I read this that it was a novella, but I wanted more to read right now. But I will definitely read the other three novellas when they are released. I have read other books from Kendra Elliot and I loved them all. This book is a great read and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a well crafted mystery.I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. To be honest I'm not normally a fan of ongoing storylines such as this. I usually like my couples to get a happy ending and move on from there. However, I tend to enjoy novellas when written by talented authors and so I thought I'd give this first one in the "Rogue River" series a try. Although I do own other books by Kendra Elliot, I'm ashamed to say I haven't read any of them. That's a mistake I'll have to correct because I really enjoyed this story. Zane and Stevie were both well fleshed, and I truly cannot wait to follow them along on their journey. This entire story was fast paced, full of action and suspense, and literally just flew by. I have no doubt I'll enjoy watching their professional and personal relationships develop as the series continues. I'm already looking forward to book 2 by Melinda Leigh next, and seeing what she has in store for Stevie's sister Carly and her estranged husband Seth. I may have to wait for a price drop though, because I'm not sure I'm willing to pay $3.99 for a novella.

And like any good novella the story was over way too quickly.We open On Her Father’s Grave with Stevie Taylor returning home after the passing of her father and her getting tired of life in LA. But not all is smooth sailing on Stevie’s first day of work or the day before her first day of work. The death of a local teen has everyone on edge.Zane Duncan finds himself through into the role as Chief of police (and not by choice). But what can he do other than honor the man who treated him like one of his own. Zane knows something is not right with Hunter’s death but finding the answers are not that easy. Could there be more more to this than just a kid overdosing on a new drug?Like any novella I review I can't give you much more then I loved it. I can’t wait for the next installment by Ms. Leigh to find out what happens next in the quiet little town of Solitude Oregon. I do hope that we will get to see more of Zane & Stevie in future books too. I want know what is happening with them. I really enjoy Kendra Elliot. In a series of four novellas, Ms Elliot paired with Melinda Leigh to create a quiet Oregon town that is beginning to lose its innocence about drug use. The chief of police and his newly hired police officer from LA are just ferreting out the issue at the end of this story. I presume it will continue in the next three of the series. As noted above, the characters develop quickly and are well drawn including the supporting cast. Many questions are raised and hints are given to make the reader wonder who is involved with the drugs. I believe this is a good start to a novel. If you like a bit of romance, that is thrown in, too. However, it appears the reader will need to purchase four novellas at about three dollars each to finish this work. I am not that enamored of the story to spend the money. I will continue to read Ms Elliot's full-out novels. They are adrenaline pushing and fully formed in plot and character and not overly formulaic and cost at least half as much as this Rogue River series. The Rogue River series would have made one pretty good book.

About the Author

Michael Dante DiMartino is an American animation director best known as the co-creator, executive producer, and story editor of the animated TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, both on Nickelodeon. He was born in Shelburne, Vermont. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design with Bryan Konietzko, with whom he created Avatar.
