This is the first book I am reading by Louise Bay and I enjoyed her writing style and how beautifully the story flows . A perfect opposite attracts situation. Alexander is a swoon worthy workaholic barrister and Violet is his sassy assistant. I enjoyed their banter, chemistry and overall story. After finishing this book I went back and bought the other two books Kings of Wall Street & Duke of Manhattan as I enjoyed Scarlet and Max character in this story and realized they already have their own stories. I hope We will be getting Darcy’s story next . This one is definitely a must recommend!

And Alexander had so much tunnel vision, Violet finagled him out of his tunnel in just the perfect way.Not only was I thinking...Just Kiss Already!!...but you made me laugh quite a few times. I highlighted a couple that made me laugh..."I didn't know his first name, but I knew how long it took him to pee. It felt like a small victory." - Violet"Put me down, Violet," she said. "Anyone would think you'd just been released from prison." - Darcy (Can't wait for Darcy's story)I am a loyal fan and subscribe to your Facebook Readers Group. When you were writing this you posted one day that you felt your readers were going to hate you for the scene you just wrote for Violet. I knew exactly which scene it was and I have to admit...I was literally screaming at Violet. I was slightly mad at you too! ;) But you redeemed yourself with the remaining book!

Once I started The British Knight, I didn’t want to put it down. I love this author’s books and this one was no exception. I loved Violet. She’d been cheated badly a few years ago, both in her relationship and business. It had changed her direction in life and left her living more in the moment, rather than planning ahead.After stalling in her life, she takes the offer from one of her friends to go to the UK and do three months work there.That’s where she meets barrister Alexander Knight. He’s the workaholic of workaholics. Driven to prove himself because of his father’s achievements. He doesn’t really need to prove himself, but he feels he has to and the man doesn’t give himself any time off at all.The attraction between him and Violet is instantaneous. When they finally act on it, it’s hot and sexy.Overall, I loved this. It had a bit of everything. It was funny at times, emotional, sexy and hot. When Alexander gets distracted by work at a time when he shouldn’t have, it begins the path to destruction. Violet’s never pushed him to spend time with her, but he realises the hard way, that he’s a selfish man and driven for all the wrong reasons.I wanted to slap him sometimes, and hug him too. Loved this.

I love romance novels! I read the earlier books in this series with mixed results, didn’t care for the first two, loved the last one. The premise of this book was mildly intriguing - young American woman looking for adventure travels to England, goes to work in law chambers, and falls for a barrister. The heroine, Violet King, was compelling - pretty, smart, and sassy, if a bit scarred. The hero, Alexander Knightley, was also compelling - handsome, smart, and driven, but unavailable. They had great chemistry and plenty of sizzle. The storyline was straightforward and predictable, but the writing style was so good that it kept the story moving. Overall, I loved it, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Darcy’s book is as good as Scarlet’s and Violet’s!

I haven’t read in quite some time and as soon as I saw this blurb I instantly one-clicked. And although it was a little different then what my brain thought it would be—people in their twenties—it turned out so much better than I had originally hoped for. Perfect after not reading for a long time. I couldn’t put this book down. And I missed two or three other couples. the story took me to beautiful England and the sexy mr. Knightley. This book had charm, sweetness and the fun times were sexy to read. Wink. Very strong characters who made me feel all emotions. I just loved this book. And I’ve never read from this author before so that’s pretty cool. Definitely getting the paperback!!!

My most recent Bay book and as usual, it is superb. I listen to some of her books over and over on audible. Great bed time stories...they help me fall asleep and if I awaken during the night, lull me back. Not boring at all, just good love stories with fairly predictable "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy finds girl again" scenarios. Hero and heroine are likable, sizzling sex, developing love, just the perfect love story.

This was a great book. Alex was so driven. All he did was work. His marriage failed because he only worked and resented spending time with his wife. They have been separate for 3 years. Violet is brought in to help Alex. He is years behind in his billing and his office is a mess with towers of paper. Violet is his perfect match in everything and Alex realizes he doesn’t mind spending time with her and enjoying life since Violet is in London for the first time. The start to really get close to each other but Violet’s time in London is coming to an end what will that do. Read it to find out.

Alexander and Violet.....love them both. They were definitely as we say opposite attracts. First meeting on the subway, only to be his assistant he didn’t know about. The attraction was mutual immediately. They take you on a emotional roller coaster of attraction, lust, sex, disappointments and love... a page turner. I’m loving this series. Does Darcy find love too?

The characters are interesting enough without this added element and sometimes it seems to just be a device to bring hem strongly into the mystery at hand. It is just not necessary to tie the main characters into every mystery like this. they are detectives...not partners in the same force, but related forces... one state police and one FBI...and could be drawn into the story line in other ways... but no... it has to be because it happens to them or to someone related to them... and this is a crutch that you see often in comic book relationships...such as the leader of one super group turns out to be the long lost father of a character in the main superdoop group... it's just not necessary for the story line or the interaction between the different elements of the story.This is my main problem with what would otherwise be a very enjoyable series. I am reading the third book in the series now and , once again, this connection thing pops up ... so it would seem to be a plot device the author simply cannot do without. I hope sh grows out of it.

Ava and Mason are busy investigating when two more men are found hanging from bridges. With thoughts of a serial killer, the press is clamoring for details. Ava, Mason and the Task Force are trying to find something that connects these seemingly very different men. And, somehow, Ava's sister Jayne is caught up in the case since her current, shady boyfriend seems to be on the killer's radar.The story is very suspenseful. I also liked the relationship that Ava and Mason are building. Sections from the killer's point of view add an extra creepiness to the story too. Fans of romantic suspense will enjoy this story.

This is an excellent plot peopled by interesting characters in believable situations that demand the reader's full attention. Believe me, reading does not get much better than that! This plot could easily come from a current television program or perhaps the daily newspaper. The beginning of the work sells the deal! Elliot catches the reader with the presentation of an unbelievable situation in a most intimate manner. Honestly, I felt myself truly hearing the character's labored breathing. As the subsequent copycat crimes unfolded the intimacy was always there. The two detectives and their intimate relationship added an element of warmth and believability to the entire plot. When introduced to the perpetrator, I felt the squeamish touch, labored breathing, and even his soul's pain. The interwoven facts of the case with the way it is unfolded kept me reading long into the night. If you love a good mystery, this is it. I highly recommend.

Kendra is a great writer. She has a way of engaging the reader quickly without being predictable. Personally, I greatly enjoy serial character books that have an easy flow from one book to the other without being too redundant in rehashing what happened in prior books. In the rare occasion I skip a book, Ms. Scott also doesn't write spoilers that take the fun out of reading the skipped book. (Although I encourage you to read them in order!) She develops plots that are interesting and complex enough to keep me interested. The chemistry between McLane and Callahan is interesting without being sappy or explicit. And the dynamic between the McLane twins provides a good experience of unpredictable psychological drama. And I look forward to more development of the sidekick partners of Ray and Lander. Great Writer, great read, great series!

My suggestion to fans of Kendra Elliott is to read "Vanished" (Callahan & McLane Book 1) first because jumping into their relationship as it matures misses much of the important detail about how it came to be as it was formed. The personalities of Callahan and separately McLane are intense, well delineated, filled with anticipation and hope as they work through their dramas as driven by a new and thrilling case. To understand the depth of the characters that are brought forward in this sequel, it is helpful to understand not just their own situations but those that surround them and those are founded in "Vanished" (Book 1). Many of us in our lives know that tension, stress with intensity from threatening circumstances can make or break trust and emotion. Kendra Elliott brings all of that to a fine and intense point in "Bridged" making the conclusion a "can't put it down" page turner!

Ms. Elliot has a unique style: she manages to tie the agents into the stories. In this one, Ava becomes a part of the story, much to Mason's ire. This plot device shows the depth of their love.I'm not a big fan of how Ms. Elliot writes the "romantic" part of the book(s); they're too scripted, too stiff. I've often thought how much better her books would be without that element in them, but I do like the love these two characters have for each other.

So, I was more than a little surprised that a new book by EO Wilson was out for more than 8 seconds without a single review yet posted on Amazon. I rarely write a review unless I feel passionately about an item -- at one end of the spectrum or another -- but I could not resist the chance to write the first review for a book by a scientist whom I revere and admire for his indomitable energy and unrelenting productivity.I should preface my review by acknowledging that I am a somewhat biased devotee of Wilson's in that I think he and I share much in common: I am a snake biologist (Professor Wilson was nicknamed "Snake" by his comrades as a teenager, as he went through a three-year stint as an amateur ophiologist [a fancy word for "snake biologist"] before he turned to studying ants), I'm a Southerner (He is too.), I'm an evolutionary biologist (He is too.), an Eagle Scout (So is he.), a science educator (yep, you guessed it...), and I am a proponent of conserving biodiversity (and Ed is the proverbial Patriarch and Anointed High Priest of that unifying concept in science). I mention these aforementioned biases not to share my résumé, but because this book bends to all of those, among others. And so, as I rightly guessed, Mr. Wilson would draw upon a lot of these shared interests in order to make his points and teach us. (This may be a downside for those of you who connect more readily with chemistry, physics, or astronomy examples. This book might have been more aptly called "Letters to a Young Biologist", but I think the title the publishers went with is the right one.)I am also among Wilson's target readers -- young aspiring scientists, but more emphatically -- anyone who would love to be a success as a scientist. This book has helped me feel less daunted by the sometimes mistaken commonly perceived demands of science."Letters to a Young Scientist" is a clarion call for many MANY more people to join the ranks of natural scientists and to embrace a life of scientific investigation. Ed Wilson leaves no one with room for excuses to fail in this endeavor. He addresses the concept (or reality?) that if we humans are to survive the foreseeable future, we need to be a science-minded people.Perhaps some of the most comforting aspects of the book are that Wilson belabors the point that you don't need to be a math wiz or even have a high IQ to be a great scientist. (Ed did not take Calculus until he was a 32-year-old professor at Harvard, and his grade was a C.) He divulges his own IQ as a modest "If I can do it without genius levels, you can too" admission. In fact, he argues that a high IQ can be something of a detriment to a scientific career.Since many readers are likely to also be followers of Wilson's other works and thus, interested in biology, another book that I have found to have been written in a similar spirit of deep caring and empathy for the non-stereotypical and uninitiated scientist is Reading the Story in DNA: A Beginner's Guide to Molecular Evolution; it is written for the scientist interested in the whole organism, but who wants to understand how to DO and get started on molecular evolution research and techniques, WITHOUT all of the math. I think you'll love it.Okay. Now, back to "Letters"...Do I agree with everything written in this collection of sagely correspondence? No. One such point of contention for me was when Wilson admonished readers on how many hours they should expect to devote to teaching, administrative duties, research, etc if they choose an academic profession -- the part I didn't like was when he says [paraphrasing], "Only rest from work and seek diversion on weekends. Don't take vacations; real scientists don't take vacations. They go on field trips." As a herpetologist, I know of several friends and colleagues who use their vacation-time to take their families looking for snakes (for fun and research) in prime, wonderful habitat; they have formed rich memories that lasted a lifetime, and all family members seem to have enjoyed those times and remember them with fondness. I do hope to adopt that with my toddler. And perhaps Wilson's assertion is slightly tongue-in-cheek here, BUT, as a father, I'm also cautious to not subject my son in his vacation time to always doing dad's hobby or livelihood. And hey, I love Disney World, so my son won't know it's not totally for him. ;) But, once again, I digress...If you have already read other works by Wilson, you will likely see some redundancy of ideas and stories in this book, such as his informal rules of biological evolution he has pointed out in Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge, for instance (i.e.. "For every unanswered problem or question in nature, there exists a species suited to solving that problem."). You will also hear of how he and MacArthur came up with the Theory of Island Biogeography. He uses his collection of examples and ideas as a teaching tool for how to think and create like a scientist. And keep in mind, this book is meant as an introductory rabble-rouser, in the best sense -- as a shot in the arm for the passionate tenderfoot -- so some review of Wilson's life's work is expected, albeit it is in a fresh, new light.And there are new nuggets of wisdom gleaned from over 60 years as an Ivy League researcher. He has offered two different ways that convergently lead to the formation of a scientist: (1) the problem-solver who often employs models -- organismal or otherwise -- to get to the bottom of unanswered questions, and (2) the naturalist who loves and finds pleasure in his or her favorite species or phenomenon for the sake of its mere existence, who tries to learn all that is currently known on the topic, and is naturally led to questions. Again, since Wilson is drawing on his own experience, he mostly explores the latter pathway to sciencedom.Overall, I would highly encourage young and old scientists to read this book. It is, as the title suggests, non-technical, and is suitable for high schoolers and mature-minded middle schoolers. (And older.) E.O. Wilson can indeed offer advice on most aspects of doing science, from encouraging "quick and sloppy" experiments on a whim (some of his own produced no noteworthy results for him at all; others paid handsome dividends beyond reasonable hope), the importance of daydreaming and fantasizing about science, taking the responsibility of being a world expert on a subject (which he asserts is often easier and quicker than most people think), to devising testable and successful frameworks of conceptual knowledge that we call scientific theories.I've a very sorry track record when it comes to finishing books, but I read this one in three or four days quite easily. It's a quick read, even for this notoriously slow, easily distracted reader. The main idea of this book is that you don't need to fit the stereotype of a scientist (e.g. math wiz, genius, poor communicator [I added that last one]) in order to be a good scientist. AND if you don't fit the stereotype, you are exactly what the world and scientific community at large really lacks. Ed Wilson says that the world needs your unique talents, badly. I agree. Happy reading! I would recommend this book as a gift to young people. Buy a copy, read it yourself, and then give it away.

This is a good book, but it seems more like an autobiography with some bits and pieces of wisdom here and there than an advice book or guide for young scientists. It does tell you some helpful tips, but too rarely for it to be advertised as an advice book. The one example he brings up through the book is his study on ants, which is great, and very interesting, don't get me wrong, but it seems like the study is too specific to use as an example for the entire topic of science. If it gave a bit more advice, this would be a great book. I'm sure some people still find it helpful, but it just wasn't really what I was looking for in this book.

I believe a more accurate but less catchy title would be "Letters from an Old Scientist". While I certainly respect Wilson, I believe he tries too hard to extrapolate his 50+ years of experience forward to the next 50 years. In so doing, he overestimates the relevance of challenges he faced decades ago in the future and neglects the tremendous disruptions that are happening today. I would have liked to hear more about the relevance of technology going forward. Genetic mapping and computer modeling are changing the ways research is done, yet little is mentioned. Also, the tremendous shift away from publicly financed research (especially in universities) towards the financially motivated private sector is diluting any "knowledge for knowledge's sake" initiatives. If you can't monetize it, you probably can't fund it.While I did find the book an interesting read, I wouldn't pass it on to college students today as guidance for a career in science.

First, let me make it clear, I am an E. O. Wilson fan. I love his range of thinking: from his passion for insects to developing the next generation of scientists. (Of course, he makes many important stops along the way). I don't always agree with him, but I always want to read what he thinks.I chose this book because I raised an aspiring entomologist who has just left home for UC Davis. I wanted to see if there was anything I forgot to tell him. I'm sure there is, but Dr. Wilson helps fill in some of the blanks.Wilson's ego shines through, ("let me tell you a little bit more about me and all I've done")but that serves to reinforce what can be accomplished in a scientific career. I think he has reason to be satisfied with himself.He is very encouraging about the vast undiscovered reaches of science.I was just a tad disappointed in his down-playing the importance of math. I firmly believe strong math skills are a vital tool for any scientist. Distilling data is at the core of what they do and how knowledge is advanced. And understanding what all that data means requires a good math mind.But this book does all I had hoped it would -- it reinforces the dream of my young scientist.

This small book could have been further condensed into an article in a magazine. There is good advice in it, but there are wide swaths of excessive autobiographical details in it with the advice slapped on as an afterthought. Bit disappointing. Would have given it two stars, but the scant advice given in this book is indeed good. Save money, watch his TED talk instead.

Dr. Wilson's book is advertised as a collection of letters to encourage and advise young scientists. What I got out of it (as a young scientist) was "be passionate, be antisocial, never take breaks, pick your friends, get really lucky". I was hoping to read this to be inspired to continue my PhD aspirations, it neither hurt nor helped me.

Edward Wilson, authenic writing. A treasure for my humble library. This year I have been enraptured by novelists and musicians that don’t find their inspiration or ability at the bottom of a bottle or from a needle in the arm, and their success is not campaigned by their wealthy relatives. It would be wonderful if more real world writing found its way into our classrooms.

Welch’s work is a strong showing of deep theology, made applicable in a number of significant culture issues. The author address is the nature of the soul with great precision, gently unpacks the cultural fallacies of the chemical in balance theory, and lovingly points people to accurate gospel truth that will result in her change for life change and a number of areas related to Cine sickness acted out physically.All in all, I would strongly recommend this work. Though I do wish the author would update it, reflecting his insight(s) on some of the cultural thought change that has occurred as a result of the DSM-5.I dropped a star to 4, as opposed to 5, as I wished there would have been a it more on somatic changes the spirit makes on the body, but that is because that specific subject was why I read the book. So it misses that mark for this reader.

I love this book, as a Christian I find it interesting to look into the human mind and understanding God's concept and following up with Christianity.I enjoyed this book, its an interesting read.

Ed Welch is one of the best and most down-to-earth people in the Christian counseling community, in my opinion. He simplifies complex issues while not being overly reductionistic in his presentation. That ability is the mark of someone who truly knows and understands their subject matter. "Blame It on the Brain" challenges the reader to consider things that often get overlooked of swept away in the pursuit of the latest and greatest research or theories. Dr. Welch holds firmly to the conviction that, though we may face very challenging disorders, we are still responsible for our response to those areas, and ultimately, able in some way to submit those areas to God, regardless of whether they ever seem to get better.

This book was very helpful in "teasing out" the interplay between our physiological makeup/abnormalities and our mind, or how we choose to think. Too often in this day we choose to dump everyone's choices on their physiological alterations, absolving them of responsibility. However, the Bible puts responsiblity for choices squarely on a person's own spirit. I liked the categories in this book--"The Brain Did It", "Maybe The Brain Did It" and "The Brain Didn't Do It". Even when the brain did do damage, the person still has some ability to make choices and one can deal gently with them, based on God's power, by His Spirit, to touch their deepest part.

Very insightful. Good understanding of the human condition of sin and living in a fallen world, at the same time realizing that it is easy to confuse suffering and sickness with conditions resulting from issues in our hearts. Ed Welch does a good job at looking at medical conditions affecting the brain, and spiritual issues which are expressed by our actions as we have thought them out. I highly recommend reading this book, especially for Biblical counselors and pastors.

Dr. Welch has a Ph.D. in psychology as well as theology degrees, and has been a counselor for years. His doctoral work was on brain physiology, so Blame it on the Brain is the fruit of 20 years of reflection on the subject.Welch wonders if the brain "has been given too much credit" (p. 12). Many have held the brain responsible for some bad behavior: "My disease did it!" (p. 13). While the observations of the rapidly expanding field of brain sciences can be very helpful, when interpreted through a biblical lens they can be put in a more modest and helpful perspective. How do these discoveries illustrate biblical truths that can be applied to people's lives? Instead, too often sin problems are mislabeled as solely brain problems, and thus the true cause is left unaddressed (p. 25).Four very practical principles emerge from this approach to mind-body issues: 1. The brain cannot by itself `make' a person sin (pp.49f.). 2. Each person's abilities (brain strengths and weaknesses) are unique (pp.53f.). 3. Brain problems can expose heart problems (pp.56f.). 4. Sinful hearts can lead to physical illness; upright hearts can contribute to good health (pp.58f.).In part two of the book these principles are then concisely but thoughtfully applied to a series of examples. First are apparently physical issues: Alzheimer's disease (pp. 67f.) and head injury (pp.85f.). Next are more psychiatric issues: depression (pp.115f.), "A.D.D." (pp. 131f.), homosexuality (pp.151f.), and alcoholism (pp. 183f.).Welch's treatments of these problems abound with practical, sensitive insight. In the process he clearly defines the deeper issues at stake: what is the soul?; what is the body?; what is sin?For me, a crucial component of the book is the section on the mind-body relationships, especially pp. 43-48. Welch is careful to distinguish the heart from the body, but without separating them. Drawing upon rich Trinitarian analogies, he is careful to outline a model that seeks not to over-emphasize either the duality or the unity. This understanding enables us to try to distinguish between sin and sickness. As Welch ably define sit: "any behavior that does not conform to biblical commands or any behavior that transgresses biblical prohibitions proceeds form the heart and is sin" (p. 43). Conversely, "any behavior that is more accurately called a weakness proceeds form the body and is sickness or suffering" (p. 44). We are to repent of sin. But things that reflect only our creaturely limitations are not immoral, but proceed from our fallen bodies.The example Welch uses of hallucinations is illustrative. The Bible does not prohibit them, so we can not admonish someone for experiencing them. We are called to compassion for them. The hallucination may have been caused by a prior sinful choice, and the hallucinatory may respond to them with sin, but the hallucination itself is not sinful. A helpful chart on p. 45 lists out some examples of body problems (broken bones, mental retardation, feelings of depression, hallucinations) and heart (mind) problems (anger, pride, drunkenness). Of course, many problems involve both the body and the heart or mind, and in unequal and obscured proportions. How do we separate out the differences? And why is it helpful to try?Each summer during high school and college I worked in a nursing home. The changes I witnessed in particular residents after being away from them for almost a year were often shocking and tragic. I think of a seemingly kind and affable man named D., who in a few months seemed to transform into an unrecognizably profane and lewd bore. Welch demonstrates convincingly that such brain or body problems as D.'s Alzheimer's can expose what is in the heart. The brain appears to have led the person into bad behavior, when it is more accurate to say that the brain problem allowed certain otherwise hidden parts of their heart to be uncovered. Welch contends, "In some case brain problems function like truth serum for the heart" (p. 58).Welch's treatment of the subject is fairly comprehensive but far from exhaustive. Questions of application remain. If meds can only, at their best, address the body issues and not the heart, how do we know which needs addressing? Welch addresses this in a wise, but frustratingly brief section in pp. 125-127. Adopting Welch's guidelines is easy enough, but applying them to real life situations, I know from experience, is another matter. What about the person who meets some but not all of the criteria listed on p. 127 (they are over forty; have had no prior history of problems with depression; are taking prescription drugs, etc.)? This is not a flaw in Welch's treatment of the topic, just a limitation of its brief explication here.I have known a person, for example, who had his first bout with depression at age 62. But it was extremely serious. He became despondent and delusional and was checked into a residential treatment facility. His case meets the first of the two criteria listed by Welch, but not the last two. Clearly, his depression was triggered by some circumstances in his life (some the direct result of some horrible choices, others not). Yet, just as clearly it seems that the depression, while largely originating from his sinful behavior, now had a physical component. His medications, while wrought with multiple serious side effects, did seem to successfully contribute to his ability to function. Yet, if I were given a decision making role in his `treatment,' I would want to somehow know: were the drugs really helpful, or was it their placebo effect? And if they did reduce his anxiety, is that all necessarily good? Did he not need discomfort to drive him to make changes in his absolutely horrendous behavior? And if so, how much and what type of discomfort?Anyway, Welch's book wrestles with some deep issues and presents them in a lucid and readable format.

This book really gives you a grounded biblical view of mental diagnoses and matters of the heart. Provides practical and straightforward steps on how to approach issues and gives some scenarios as examples and basic principles.

In an age of confusion and questioning the sufficiency of Scripture, Welch comes along and gives clear guidance. This book is detailed but practical. It does not reject everything psychology says but submits it all to the authority of Scripture.
