Profit is nice but cash is critical to really understanding an investment and the template provided by the author shows you the way. The author walks us through a process of converting a normal cash flow statement into a better understood template format. Once converted to the template almost anyone with common business sense can understand how cash is flowing thru a company. The template allows an investor to to see how much cash a company is actually generating, where the money goes (such as interest, taxes, capex, investments) and to see how it is financed (debt, equity or cash on hand). The author also provides us with analysis of the template format for each phase of the business life cycle (startup, growth, mature, declining) that all companies eventually experience.It will help if you know your way around a cash flow statement - but it is not required. If you don't, you may need to put in a little work to follow the examples. However, if you do put in the effort, you will find the exercise well worth it and it will be of immense help if you are making your own investment decisions. This is really an excellent book and if I could recommend only one book on investment financial analysis this would be it.

This is one of the two best books on cash flow analysis I've seen, alongside Creative Cash Flow Reporting: Uncovering Sustainable Financial Performance. It is well-written, clear and covers all stages of business. An excellent book. Recommended!

In the book it's about a new kind of template to reconstruct the real cashflow in a company. There are examples of Nokia & BlackandDecker. But I don't get it how it is constructed. I have used all the numbers in the examples to reconstruct it for myself but I have failed to do it.There is no explanation how this reconstruction is done and with no help from the author it's guessing.On page 63: operating cash margin is 5741 and on page 72 it is 7457 and now explanation for the difference............................ how do I have to reconstruct it for myself !!!!Also on page 90: it shows an operating cash margin of 578.2 but how do this number appear. There are a 10K rapport of B&D of an P&L and cash flow statement but how is this number of 578.2 achieved ???You are left in the dark as a reader

A good book to better understand cash flow statements for all kinds of analysts. The centrepiece of the book is a reclassification of the cash flow statement to make it more comparable across firms. The book deals with difference between international and US accounting standards. The reading isn't exactly fun, but conveys important knowledge. The book has many examples. maybe too many.The book also discusses the cash flow aspects of a company's life cycle. Here, I feel that the author is actually trying to find filler material. It gets a bit repetitive. In general, the weakest part of the book is the implications and usage of the restated cash flow statement. The author is basically taking the perspective of a creditor. I would have liked more on using the information for competitive analysis and investment decisions. A chapter on fraud detection (practical evidence of warning flags) would also have been much appreciated. It would also have been good to tie in to the academic literature. I am sure there exist studies how companies cash flow has changed and developed. Such more descriptive material would have been very interesting.Another good book is Mulford's Creative Cash Flow Reporting: Uncovering Sustainable Financial Performance. Despite its title it is a general book on cash flow statements. It provides more detail on each item. The style is much more meandering and there are very few conclusions. Very surprisingly, there is hardly anything on fraudulent usage. If I just want one book on cash flow I would pick Jury's book, but Mulford's book is a good second reading.

I have read other books addressing cash flow but this one is so superior that I'm compelled to state that there's a clear difference in kind, not just degree, when compared to other texts. The author sets forth in the Introduction (which I strongly encourage all to read online to get a true sense of the scope of the text) his aims which are to instruct the reader in a complete understanding of the cash cycle in any business and to be able to restate those cash flows in a standard template to sweep away inconsistencies and irregularities in reporting so that the actual cash flows are made evident. Topics covered include the working asset cycle, fully worked examples restating both IAS and US GAAP cash flows, proper spreadsheet modeling and risks (the latter a first in any text I'm aware of), understanding cash flows in growth, mature, and declining businesses, ... these are just a few of the insightful chapters I've digested, worked the examples, and enjoyed. The author writes in a lucid, even compelling manner and, given the absolute clarity of the presentation, there's no question he has mastery of accounting, the English language, and pedagogy; one can write obscurely when the topic isn't completely understood but clear, detailed explanations with worked examples are only a result of deep experience in the field. In closing, this is an eminently practical book that deserve not only a place on every practitioner's bookshelf but on their desk as a working guide to cash flow analysis.

My wife Ivy and I have been avid readers of Michael Pollan's previous articles and book-length works especially those involving healthful eating and the food industry. By way of background I am a forty-something surgeon and my wife is an author and blogger with MS who has on occasion had to cope with condition-related mood issues. Without having done much research into the psychedelics other than to ensure they are indeed medically safe (as this book discusses in more detail) a couple years back we participated in several overseas guided ayahuasca (a psychedelic plant mentioned in How to Change Your Mind) sessions. Our experiences as a couple participating both to obtain hoped-for medical benefits and for, in my case, the "betterment of well people" to quote Pollan's book have been discussed online and mirror the experiences described by Mr. Pollan and by the numerous academic professionals, researchers, and patients interviewed throughout this journalistic masterpiece. To describe this further is beyond the scope of my review but we can vouch that this book is one hundred percent serious journalism and that research investment into the study of psychedelics as medications for treatment resistant psychiatric conditions and as spiritual aids for the betterment of humanity is very much needed and is well underway as described in detail in Pollan's book.As for the prosaic the book is over 400 pages and written at an advanced level and will engage the most curious of readers. The book is organized into six chapters. The first is a broad introduction to the topic of psychedelics and the second discusses psychedelic mushrooms which possess an active ingredient that is the topic of many current-era human research studies. The third chapter discusses the first wave of psychedelic research (I had no idea that in the 1950's these substances were academically studied and thought to hold great promise only for that research to be practically shut down as a result of the political upheaval of the late 60's) and is of great interest to anyone interested in the history of these substances even if one has no interest in their pharmacological effects. The fourth discusses the author's own personal experiences as a middle-aged adult with the psychedelics and he is spot-on with his fascinating first person descriptions of the experience. Finally, chapters five and six discuss current research, expected medical benefits and benefits to the well-person, the neuroscience behind the actual function of psychedelics in the brain, and proposed solutions for safely distributing the psychedelics to persons who could benefit.For many readers this book will "change your mind" about the loaded term "psychedelic" and will open you up to at least the possibility the world could be a better place if these substances could be studied with as much zeal as are other pharmaceuticals and could be offered safely for the benefit of the millions of persons worldwide suffering from conditions related to dysfunction of the mind.

This book is many things. It's entertaining to say the least. Pollan takes the heavily loaded topic of psychedelics (LSD and psilocybin) and analyzes it from the compelling perspective of a 63-year-old journalist who's "not at all sure he's ever had a single 'spiritually significant' experience." Every few pages, I stopped to wonder how this old guy (sorry, Mr. Pollan) is so much more fluent on the topic than me, a 25-year-old hippie vegan.But that's exactly what makes the book so important. Psychedelics don't need to be locked in a role as mind-expanding recreational drugs for young hippies. Research suggests they can play an important role in combating mental illness, and if properly regulated, provide psychological benefits for "the betterment of well people." If there's anyone best suited to help society move past the 1960s and take a fresh, honest look at psychedelics, it's Michael Pollan.Also consider listening to his podcast with Tim Ferriss about this new book.

I was thrilled to learn that Michael Pollan was going to tackle the subject of psychedelics and the promising research being done by MAPS and Johns Hopkins, among others. I love his previous books. He is a skilled writer and does such a great job explaining complex topics. I got my copy one day early (thank you to Amazon's efficient delivery service). I am only partially through it, and so far it is fascinating. His recent appearance on Tim Ferriss' podcast was tremendous and is a great introduction to the book and his careful handling of the topic. The potential value for the use of psychedelics in mental health treatment must be fully explored. I hope this book helps further that exploration.

Last night I finished reading Michael Pollan's latest book, How to Change Your Mind - What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence (Penguin Press, 2018). I'd ordered the book pre-publication, so they sent it to me on the day of its release. I'd been happily anticipating the book as I've admired Pollan's previous works very much. His journalism has long dealt with 'Gaia-related' topics and his even-handed, well written and researched presentations have always included the aspects of conciousness at their core. I can unhesitatingly recommend this volume. He presents both a history of modern (1950-70s) 'psychedelic' research studies & explorations and a current report of the newly resumed studies in the many uses of entheogens. This includes both overviews of clinical studies, practices of 'shamanic traditions', and his own personal experiences. I'm sure you'd recognize the names of many of the principle players & circumstances he describes; old friends of psychedelic literature & exploration.I think it's great that such a thoughtful book would be offered by this well-accomplished 'mainstream' journalist. This can only lend more weight to the general public & our authorities to developing a less reactionary and more sane view of these sacramental benefactors. Pollan, like all of us, is very concerned about how we can continue to sustainably exist as individuals, a society, a species. I pretty much loved this book. Taking place during the Bosnian/Serbian conflict, it tells of primarily civilian life in a Sarajevo under siege. The people on whom the book centers lead sad, grim, terrified, and ultimately--at least for these characters--life-affirming lives amid the chaos. To begin with, these lives are limited and pretty tedious, circumscribed by the so difficult-to-achieve needs of daily life and the shells that fall around them and the snipers who shoot from the hills about Sarajevo almost randomly, picking off people trying merely to survive.A catalyst arrives, however, in the form of an old cellist. He has watched from his window as a shell lands amid a crowd of his friends and neighbors lined up simply for bread. Twenty-two people are killed, and the cellist decides that he will stand at the site of the killing for twenty-two days and memorialize these people by playing a specific adagio once each day. He has no idea whether he will survive for this length of time or whether another shell will fall here or a sniper will pick him off, but he decides that acknowledging this portion of lost humanity is more important than his own personal survival. And so he begins.As the other people we are reading about slowly absorb his music, little by little they are reminded, not just of better times, but of better values. Survival alone is not enough for life; something more is required. For example, the family man who spends so much of his time just getting enough fresh water for his family to drink--a very dangerous mission through multiple sniper points--decides that no matter how much more dangerous it will be, he will continue to provide water for his elderly and most unpleasant neighbor as well. The other characters we are following make different but similarly motivated decisions as well. In so doing they endorse, not just life, but human values. And the fact that these decisions are dangerous is brought home to the reader when a favorite character does not survive the decision made.This is a story full of irony and contradiction. Just as the Adagio the cellist plays is a reconstruction of a fragment mostly destroyed in a previous war and possibly not even true to the original, the decisions made are fragmentary returns to different values and most are themselves contradictory. One character chooses to honor life by dignifying the dead. Another chooses death itself rather than the taking of life. The book seems to be saying that a well-lived life is itself dangerous and contradictory.However grim, this is also a beautiful story--one that I highly recommend.

I came upon Steven Galloway’s novel “The Cellist of Sarajevo” while I was doing research on Vedran Smailovic, the true cellist of Sarajevo and after I learned that Smailovic was intensely angry that Galloway had used him as the inspiration for his novel and mis-represented him in many ways. Hence, I must say my perspective was rather biased as I read the novel after living in Sarajevo for 9 months and understanding a bit about Smailovic and the siege. I am rather surprised, therefore, by all the accolades that have been bestowed upon Galloway’s book and by its longevity as reflected in the fact that the University of Maryland Baltimore Campus featured the book at a recent evening lecture, punctuated by a talented young cellist and a professor who talked about the intimate human-like quality of a cello.I did not find the characters in Galloway’s books especially appealing. I know Arrow was based on a real character, actually a Serbian who killed Serbs for the Bosnian side ([...]) and who claimed to have a bad conscience from all her killings although she claimed from her hospital bed to be a “war junkie.” I had difficulty reconciling Galloway’s introspective narrative on Arrow’s internal thoughts and reflections with my own view of Arrow and the siege. I was not sure why the characters, Arrow, Dragan, and Kenan, were so perplexed about the purpose of the cellist’s acts, or why he seemed to be a rather vague symbol in the novel, despite its title. From what I read about the real cellist, he was expressing his response to the siege in the language that naturally emanated from his soul and was also paying homage to the many victims of the war. Rather than perplexing to Bosnians, he inspired them, gave them courage to take a stand for the civilization that they referred and the cosmopolitanism that Sarajevo stood for. I found it far-fetching that the Serbian sniper was so mesmerized by the cellist’s playing that he hesitated and dreamed so that Arrow could easily kill him. For those who have not lived in Sarajevo and not read the real stories of survival, Galloway’s novel is no doubt powerful . It has certainly played a significant role in providing readers the experience of the horror of war, and of the challenge of survival. But the siege was so much more complex than these experiences and its impact so much more far-reaching than any book could give justice to. Nonetheless, Galloway did an outstanding job with a difficult subject and presented three different faces and perspective from which people saw and lived those horrible days of destruction. I am glad I read it despite my misgivings.

I was so overwhelmed by this story that I can't find the right words to write about it. I'm both sorry and relieved that it's over -- sorry because it was enjoyable to read, yet relieved because it's persistent tension was finally over.This is the story of a how the music played by a cellist in the street of a war-torn city provides a few minutes of harmony each day to soothe the constant fear and suffering of the people who live there.The fear and suffering are reflected in three characters who never interact with each other. One is a man whose life revolves around walking to gather bottles of water from the town's brewery for his family. Another man, whose wife and children escaped to Italy, works at a bakery and brings home fresh bread to his sister's family, with whom he is living. The third chapter is a young female sniper who wages a private individual war with the men occupying the hill above their city.Steven Galloway made me feel like I was on those streets alongside those characters as they wondered whether someone on the hill would shoot them as they crossed the street. Their fear and helplessness became my own, and their love of what their city had once been to them reminded me of what I loved about my own home town.I'm still not sure I've found the right words, but there's no doubt about the powerful and profound impact this story has had on me.

It was evident and evocative in every sentence and every paragraph.I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what it feels like inside the mind of a passionate and committed lifelong outdoors person.I chose this rating because I read a lot, and I know how rare it is to be touched as deeply as this book touched me.In my opinion it is essential to read all three books, not just "Ring." They are flawless as one long book. The final chapter of "Raven, Seek Thy Brother" is as fine a piece of writing as I've ever chanced across, anywhere.

Gavin Maxwell (b. 1914, d. 1969) was a Scottish naturalist, adventurer, writer, and someone who proceeded through life to a much different beat than most of us. It helped that he was an aristocrat and came from money. From 1948 to 1968, he lived off and on at "Camusfeà rna", which is what he called his remote house on the coast of the West Highlands. He had many adventures there, most of which centered around his interactions with various animals -- including stags, wildcats, seals, porpoises, killer whales, and numerous wildfowl -- but the stars of his naturalist world were a handful of otters. He wrote three books about his otters and his life at Camusfeà rna - "Ring of Bright Water" (1959), "The Rocks Remain" (1963), and "Raven Seek Thy Brother" (1968). This trilogy brings all three together, although parts of the second and third books that deal with matters of Maxwell's life other than Camusfeà rna and his otters have been omitted.RING OF BRIGHT WATER: A TRILOGY has two interrelated aspects to it. The first concerns a philosophical yearning for a wild and unsullied natural world, in which man lives by himself and "at one with nature", not unlike Thoreau's "Walden". Maxwell expresses this philosophy in his Foreword: "I am convinced that man has suffered in his separation from the soil and from the other living creatures of the world; the evolution of his intellect has outrun his needs as an animal, and as yet he must still, for security, look long at some portion of the earth as it was before he tampered with it." And so Maxwell retreated to Camusfeà rna (with occasional trips abroad, such as to his brother's villas on a Greek isle or to his family "estate" or to his apartment in London - Maxwell could afford to indulge his naturalistic instincts in ways unavailable to most of us). But the world - and, I think, a certain element of Maxwell's own personality - wouldn't permit a permanent idyllic retreat to nature, and over its course the TRILOGY traces the sad death of the dream of Camusfeà rna.The other aspect of the TRILOGY - the bright and shining aspect - is provided by the otters. Five, in particular, are featured in the book: Mij (a previously unknown species from the marshes of Iraq), Edel and Teko (from West Africa), and Monday and Mossy (native Scottish otters). Maxwell kept all five for extended periods of time as personal companions and household pets. Their playfulness, affection, and intelligence are captivating. Overall, the book infectiously communicates what Maxwell describes as "a thralldom to otters, an otter fixation, that I have since found to be shared by most other people who have ever owned one." Here is just one of seemingly countless anecdotes, which takes place after Camusfeárna received a rare heavy snow:"We improvised a toboggan, to the huge delight of Teko, who would straddle it to be towed round at ever-increasing speed. He seemed to understand the idea very soon, and when we pulled the toboggan to the top of a slope he would climb on it and wait with obvious impatience for someone to shove it off down the slope. As it began to slow he would kick with his hind legs to maintain the impetus, and when his chariot came to rest he would work angrily at the ropes with his teeth, as if by so doing he could once more coax it into movement."At the same time, the book demonstrates time and again that an otter is not simply a more exotic dog or cat. Keeping an otter as a pet is a demanding and time-intensive proposition, and it has its dangers: Edel and Teko, the two of Maxwell's otters that became most famous, both launched sudden, savage attacks on humans, one resulting in the loss of two of a lad's fingers.This edition is exemplary, as is usual for publications of David R. Godine. It is sturdily bound and contains dozens of drawings and photographs. It also has the considerable virtue of including the relevant portions of the second and third books about Camusfeà rna, rather than being limited to the 1959 book, "The Ring of Bright Water". If, due to its fame, you read only that 1959 book, you will be getting only half the story of the otters.As enchanting as the otters are, I don't much care for Gavin Maxwell, who comes across as prickly, arrogant, and egocentric. And RING OF BRIGHT WATER: A TRILOGY is as much about Maxwell, perhaps even more so, as it is the otters.

This is one of my favorite books, so this particular copy is a holiday gift for my niece, who is also an animal lover! I was VERY CLOSE to Gavin's home in Scotland this past June, so I have a very good idea of the terrain and coast. I would recommend this book to anyone who appreciates the lives of animals AND Scotland!

This book is a great introduction to otters and their charming behaviors.Very worth reading.
