I have read a handful of books twice, but this is the only book I've read three times. The Onion Field, originally published in 1973, is a classic true crime book.It is the story of the murder of LA police officer Ian Campbell by a pair of small time losers, Gregory Powell and Jimmy Smith. Campbell's partner Karl Hettinger helplessly witnessed the murder and managed to escape a similar fate.The fateful night on March 9, 1963, started when Campbell and Hettinger spotted Powell and Smith making a U-turn and had no light over their license plate. The officers pulled the two over and Powell managed to get the draw on Campbell. Hettinger surrendered his weapon and Powell and Smith drove the officers out to an onion field, where the murder occurred.Powell was described as "boastful, an egomaniac and a cold-blooded killer."Smith was described as "con-wise, cunning, more impetuous and cowardly."Both were sociopaths.Hettinger was second-guessed by the LAPD for surrendering his weapon and he was essentially blamed for Campbell's death. Racked with guilt, Hettinger suffered severe depression, impotence, nightmares and crying jags. Meanwhile, Powell and Smith experienced no guilt.The trials of Powell and Smith lasted for seven years, subjecting Hettinger to even more suffering, humiliation and guilt. The ridiculousness of the justice system is highlighted. By the time the trials had ended (45,000 pages of transcript), Campbell had long been forgotten and Hettinger had suppressed many memories.Author Joseph Wambaugh tells a riveting story of small-time losers, the psychological demise of a LAPD officer and a court system that seemingly favors criminals over victims.This is a book that should be on your must-read list.

It was frustrating to see how the guilty played the system. It really makes one understand how the public became frustrated with a lot of the fallout from the changes that were made from the 1960s through the 1980s that were backlashes to the decades of police misconduct, misuse of authority, and denial of constitutionally protected civil rights to suspects and persons of interest.It is especially sad that Karl Hettinger was outlived by both killers. I can't help but believe that all the stress he went through beginning with the victimization at the hands of Powell and Smith that night in the onion field and acerbated by the subsequent trials and treatment by the justice system and the LAPD. It was unconscionable for the LAPD to make Karl a whipping boy for what happened. At least he and Helen were able to rebuild their lives as a family.Ian Campbell never got to see his daughters grow up. He never got to hear Valerie play the pipes.Jimmy Smith never made a serious attempt to do anything useful with his life. He remained a career criminal and a sniveling coward who was too obtuse to see the three fingers pointing back every time he pointed the finger at the rest of the world as the source of his troubles in his stupidly wasted life.Greg Powell got his wish to live behind bars, which is best for the rest the population. He never did anything to justify the luck of his existence even within the walls of prison.The excuse of the institutionalized man is no valid rationale for either Powell or Smith. Others have gone from rough childhoods and even prison as adults and still managed to become productive human beings. It seems from both of their backgrounds that these two sociopaths were made and not genetic anomalies.It also shows the warts of the justice system that doesn't have a Hollywood ending. It is not wrapped up with a nice prescribed verdict and everyone goes back to normal like movies or television. Cases can drag interminably eating up attorneys and prosecutors, details get lost or forgotten as witnesses disappear or die, crazy motions redirect the focus of trials from the crimes and perpetrators, and the real victims and the crimes against them are lost in the shuffle and human wreckage is strewn in the wake.As a nation we are still trying to adjust the delicate balance to the scales of justice because we are still far short of the ideal as recent events have revealed.In the final chapters, Wambaugh speaks of Ian Campbell and Karl Hettinger and their suffering being forgotten. Thanks to this book, they will not be forgotten and hopefully the courts, attorneys, and administrators in police departments will continue to learn from it.

I was surprised at how thoroughly I was swept up into this book. The author made me feel as if I were there watching the entire thing. They made a movie about it long ago and I never thought of reading it until I saw the title pop up recently in an article online. So I thought why not give it a read. And I am glad I did. It is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys police procedurals. This true story takes you into the heart of it all.

An important work in teaching police officers. Wambaugh’s book was used repeatedly as an example for how not to take a felon into custody.

I read The Onion Field many years ago and was spellbound. I wondered if, when I read it this many years later it would be as dynamic. It is a book with so much to say about our society, our judicial system, our views and treatment of those who work to protect us. It is even more pertinent today as it was in 1980 and perhaps can teach us where we left the tracks in our judicial system. An excellent read and as meaningful today as it was then.

I read this when it was first released. I decided to re-read now, and I am glad. Limbaugh takes a horrific event and makes it reason. The real story is not in the murder itself, but in how we so badly mistreated the surviving officer. Hopefully, today we don't leave them in their own onion fields, like we did Officer Hettinger. His story is the true tragedy here.

What thrilling and exciting novel. The author goes into quite a bit of detail on all the important characters. It's really an important read because of the California law that it is suppose to follow. The two officers are tragic characters while the convicts are ugly, ignorant and show their true characters. It's important to know that this case went on for years. I am sorry for the lone survivor.

A well-written, funny book about the trials and tribulations of a quirky Chinese-American second grader. In this 5th book in the highly entertaining Alvin Ho series, Alvin's mother is expecting a baby, and Alvin experiences symptoms of a sympathetic pregnancy. We enjoyed the references woven throughout the book to aspects of Chinese culture (language, food, etc.) and liked that the book presented the culture of being Chinese-American without beating you over the head with it in a preachy way. The illustrations are also beautifully done. Please note that there is a glossary in the back for historical and cultural references. The glossary is very useful (and also hilarious) so you should consult it throughout your reading of the book. We have read all of the Alvin Ho books available to date (6 books so far) and this one is my kid's favourite. We hope the author Ms. Look comes out with a new Alvin Ho book very soon!

These books would be good for boys and girls. My 2nd grade son and I read this entire series together. Every night we looked forward to learning what predicaments the well-meaning Alvin got himself into. Alvin is smart, sweet, creative, funny and tries to be a gentleman. Alvin is also shy, anxious, and unable to speak in public. My son says,"I like to read Alvin Ho. I think these are good books. I hope there will be more, like books #7, 8, 9 and 10! I think the next book should be 'Alvin Ho:Allergic to history, reading and other big stuff.'"

Getting a new sibling is a pretty common theme in children's literature. Undoubtedly because for many children it is a big deal. But I doubt many books with that theme are as funny as this one. Alvin is stunned when his mother informs him that she is pregnant and will be having a baby. Alvin freaks out big time (not unusual for him). And he is even more shocked when he is informed that he is 'sympathetically pregnant' or 'simply pathetic pregnant' as he puts it. And his friends really aren't much help telling him the dangers of naming the baby, getting fat, and crying babies. In addition, Alvin is pushed into donating his life savings and his PDK (Personal Disaster Kit) to help those suffering from the earthquake in Haiti. Can Alvin learn how to deal with the coming baby? What if, horror of horrors, it's a girl?!Alvin is a sweet boy who worries/stresses about pretty much everything on the planet, but who honestly wants to help others and do the right thing. And his family is always right there to back him up. His brother Calvin and his Rube Goldberg machines, Anibelly's kind words, and his mother's efforts to help him adjust to the coming baby all help give Alvin the support he needs to let go of some of his worries. The book is quite funny, Alvin is constantly misunderstanding what he is told by his teacher, his classmates and even his family. This book is a light fun read for early middle grade readers who may find themselves worrying about the world around them and the changes found there. Recommended.

I bought this book to donate to a school library. The Alvin Ho series is a big hit in this school and the books fly off the shelf. This book is no exception. Ms. Look has a way with words. Poor Alvin has a "pathetic" pregnancy while is mom is pregnant. Enjoyable book.

The Alvin Ho books are some of the best children's books I read to my children. We all love Alvin, he comes from a loving family with good values, he's funny and his adventures are unique.

My kids recently discovered Alvin Ho at school, so we picked up the entire series for them to read at our local bookstore. Alvin Ho: Allergic to Babies, Burglars, and Other Bumps in the Night was a hit with our household. For those who are unfamiliar with Alvin, this is the fifth book of the series based on the every day adventures of a second grade Chinese American kid and who admittingly is scared of some of the same things Alvin is scared of. Reading about a character who is scared of so many things, but who admits it's okay to be scared of things, somehow makes my kid feel a bit braver about life and gives him good perspective on how some things that seem scary really aren't as scary as originally thought.. It does help that Alvin is scared of some pretty ridiculous things... In this book, Alvin's mom is having a baby, and Alvin is coping with the prospects of the new sibling ("and don't forget, I love you forever even if you're having another baby. PS - if it's a girl, please switch for a boy!"). From going through the symptoms of a sympathetic pregnancy, to dealing with his friend Flea making him a PDK (a Pregnancy Disaster Kit), to having to deal with his burglar fears (time to defend Mom's Birthing Nest with that hockey stick!), this book was a really humorous and well written account of Alvin's thoughts, emotions, and actions during this slightly tumultuous time of childhood. The book is easy to read for chapter readers, includes many fun illustrations, and has a glossary at the end of the book referencing some of the historical events Alvin mentions, cultural explanations of Chinese items (such as Hung Bao - red envelopes given at special occasions), and some vocabulary that younger readers may not understand just yet (such as gestate or hobbits). The book is written as a first personal narrative, and everything - from story to all of the glossary terms - are written as if Alvin himself was speaking. Overall, this is a really enjoyable series for both my kids and me to read. Alvin is such a fun and very relatable character for kids - this is a series definitely worth picking up.

The audio KJV is a great way to hear God's word when you don't have time to read. I like to use it while walking and at times when reading is not possible. It works well on my iPhone and other digital devices and I enjoy Max McLean's voice.

Before you buy...- All audio bibles suffer from not being separated into book or chapter (yes, this includes the Audible version). This can make navigating to specific locations in your audio bible quite tedious.- You can listen before you buy at "Bible Study Tools" (dot com). It's free to use on the website, if you would rather save the money.- This version has no sound effects or music, just the voice actor.- Some may find the narration off-putting as the voice actor is using a fake accent. It sounds fine to me. Just know it's a performance.Why I purchased this audio bible over others...- I didn't want music or sound effects getting in the way of scripture.- The voice actor doesn't go fast and run his words together like others I've heard.---I ended up purchasing the MP3 version from a popular book store website (B&N). Recent reviews of the Audible version state that it comes in 19 parts, each part numbered. My version came as MP3 files numbering 001 to 448. As you can see, neither version is conducive to selecting book or chapter.I knew this ahead of time, after reading reviews, so I opted for the version I could control myself. After receiving the files, I set about restructuring them into book and chapter. As you can imagine, this took hours to complete, but the end result was worth it. I now have an audio bible separated by book and chapter, for easy navigation and listening.Granted, the average user isn't going to be able to achieve this. It takes some knowledge of working with audio files and software.Unfortunately, there's no other way to get an organized audio bible, unless you use a website. This is why I knocked one star off of the rating.If you want to do what I did to reorganize the MP3 version, here's how I did it...- I used Goldwave, which is audio editing software.- Set Options -> Storage to use hard drive (not memory), so you can work with large files.- Use Tool -> File Merger to combine all MP3 files into one. My resulting file was 3.31gb in size.- Convert the file from mono to stereo by using Save As and selecting a stereo attribute for your file.- Starting from the beginning of the file, select a portion of it (less than 1/5th), setting your end marker at a silent spot at the end of a chapter. Copy and Paste New the portion you selected. This puts it in a separate workspace. (The reason for this is you can't do the whole file at once, due to the software limitations.)- On the workspace you just pasted new to, use Tool -> Cue Points -> Auto Cue, setting the threshold at -40 and minimum length to 3.5 seconds (the amount of silence between the audio book's chapter separation). This results in a cue list. Split File to split into multiple files.- Verify the split by checking the beginning of each file to ensure it is the start of a chapter. Check the end to be sure it is the end of a chapter. If not, you may have to cut and paste between two adjacent files to fix the chapters.- Rename the files as you work, according to book and chapter.- Close the workspace you were using without saving, since it now resides in the split files. I had a few friends with synesthesia growing up, and hearing them describe how they saw the world was fascinating. I have a math/science background, and Daniel Tammet has always intrigued me. After finding this book for my kindle, I was quite excited to read it. I really enjoyed reading this book for the first few chapters. It was intriguing, compelling, and absolutely fascinating how Tammet describes how his mind works. What follows was not so fascinating. After the hook, Tammet pretty much goes through his life growing up, but to me it came off as almost an emotionless list of events. I did this. Then this happened. I did that. The events didn't feel particularly coherent and there seemed to be a lack of explanation of how the things that he did and the things occurring around him had any significant impact on anything at all. It was like providing a connect the dots picture of his life, but without connecting the dots. I fell disinterested and left it half read.My sister read was reading this book at the same time I did and loved it. She found it fascinating and compelling in its entirety.Summary: This book isn't for everyone. Make sure to give it a try if you're interested in Savant-ism, Aspergers, or Synesthesia. It's a different kind of beast altogether.

Autobiographies are often less than compelling, but this one is unusual. Daniel Tammet is unusual, and that's the reason primarily, but also his journey thru life and the way he's adapted while bearing the weight of autism and it's ant-social inclinations is quite stirring. It's hard to say if his unusually rare abilities stemmed from his near-death seizure attack at age four, along with other seizures around that time of his youth, but regardless of the source of his mental powers, there's no doubt that he indeed has serious cognitive abilities that are unique to himself alone. There's other savants in the world, but I've never read a book that they've written, primarily because most of them aren't able to do something like author a book, let alone travel around the world and speak to audiences of hundreds to sometimes thousands about the nature of cognitive perceptions and in particular offering new ways to see how tasks can be approached. His synesthesia, or "linked-sensorial" thinking allows his mental gymnastics with numbers, which is impressive, but equally impressive is his linguistic abilities, as he has fluency in at least ten languages including Icelandic dialect which does not have its roots in latin or Greek as most Eurpean languages do. Being able to converse in a foreign language after a mere week of study on that language is nothing short of genius in my estimation, and when combined with his prodigious mathematical abilities, like reciting 22,514 decimal places of the value of Pi in one continuous 5 hour plus sitting on "Pi Day" at Oxford University in Cambridge, and seeing numerical solutions in a dance of colors and shapes and textures all add up to a super special character that is an ongoing source of much interest to many professional minds around the globe. Able to sustain a loving relationship with another person as well makes Daniel a gifted and very special individual who has much to give to the world at large. I only wish the tale didn't end so quickly, since I was mesmerized by his personality and his benign ways, and the humility that characterizes him in all that he does. Highly recommend this book, and also recommend googling him on youtube to listen to the cadence and the sureness of his demeanor after you've comprehended the essence of his capabilities. It's all very impressive stuff, really.

He helped me see the special world where inability to recognize emotional states of others means ignoring everything outside your own attention span. It is a short book. I read it in about 4 hours even with some intentional back tracking to be sure I understood the implications of his unique view of world. You will think about this book for a long time after closing it.

I have to say that this book isn't one that I would yell out "It made me laugh! It made me cry! I was moved!" Instead, I was drawn in by the honesty and straigtforward way it was written. I'm not usually a fan of non-fiction. I like my reads to be mind candy as I use reading as escapism from real life. This book did suck me in, but for different reasons.It's amazing to have someone speak so candidly about their past, thoughts, dreams, relationships. This book gave me a whole new perspective -- not only on the way an autistic person sees things, but also on how different people live their lives. Daniel has an amazing mind. It's fascinating to hear about how it works. I found it equally fascinating to hear about the people he has relationships with, specifically his boyfriend, parents and sibblings, because they seem to be equally extraordinary people too.Thank you Daniel for sharing yourself with us. I would (and have!) recommended this book to friends and family.

Fascinating. This book gave me an inside look into the mind of an autistic savant, also I have a better understanding of epilepsy now. It amazes me how Daniel Tammet sees numbers as colors and shapes. I read the whole book in one session.Read this book if you are looking to be inspired and are looking to explore new perspectives of people with disabilities and how they see the world.I find it interesting how he can describe his mathematical abilities so clearly.
