My college horn teacher subscribed very much to the Farkas methods provided here, so I had a good foundation as a horn player. But I wish he had made this required reading so I would have had this years ago. It is a goldmine, and Farkas is very reasonable and logical in his approach. Some of what you will read by horn enthusiasts will lead you on a journey of trying new mouthpieces and experimenting with new horns and in several configurations, if you are a serious player. Farkas has it right, though. None one instrument or one mouthpiece will do it all perfectly. It, therefore, only makes sense to choose a good compromise (whether in regards to a horn, mouthpiece, or tuning position) and make the player do the rest with his/her ear and embouchure. If you are looking for common sense, and clear explanations, this book is a must (acknowledging that it could use an update...as for example, neoprene horn stops have made cork from a bottle of champagne an unnecessary recommendation) have.

First off the book was very dark in print and page background quality, almost as if it was photocopied from another source. The book read well, if you were a student, sitting right in front of the instructor. As a new student learning the French horn for the first time, the book came off sarcastic in it's wording and grammar. Not to be to totally negative, the book is very informative and in great detail...go ahead and buy it.

An old book, but Philip Farkas describes everything so methodically that many aspects of horn playing just make more sense. It also has some very simple but effective exercises that are good to come back to at any level.

I live by this. I call it the horn bible. Some techniques are outdated, but overall this provides so many exercises to improve playing.

Within 10 minutes my son learned things about technique and aperture that he had been wondering about. He is a state-level high school horn player at 14. But this book has shown him many things to improve his technique. Highly recommend!

This book is just fantastic. In the first half an hour of reading, Farkas explains an incredible amount of information that is all completely relevant to the playing of the French Horn. He offers his own suggestions on technique and plenty of pointers, especially offering new fingerings and explaining why they exist. He explains the history of the horn and explains why players have to do what they do (ex. Hand placement, fingerings, etc). Really interesting and helpful. The included warm ups have become my daily routine and are extremely helpful. Excellent book, the only thing I disliked is that this text is quite outdated in its horn maintenance instructions.

This has been one of my favorite books of instruction for over forty years. I took a copy to Seoul Korea when I was stationed there in 1971 with the Eighth Army Band, but when I played a few concerts with the Seoul Sinfonietta I gave that copy to the first horn player in that chamber group. My little contribution to international good will. So I was without that book for many years, until my interest in playing the horn resurfaced, and then I was pleased to find it published in a smaller format, suitable for carrying around with other music. Mr. Farkas was a very good man, and a meticulous player and teacher. He could be accused of occasionally "overthinking" (such as where he gets a little obsessive about too much pressure and recommends trying to play the horn without using your hands as it sits on a slippery surface), but the foundations of his instruction are solid. As my ability increases, I am still now finding little jewels in his book that, with a more mature perspective and increased understanding, help me to develop even further.

It's tricky, a message of "think for yourself, question everything" but at the same time tries to direct your thinking with instructions....I don't really resonate with the P's via Barbara, they seem to sap me of my strength :-( they do not provide tools, just limiting "rules"There are those who provide tools for removing the layers of blindfolds we wear. (Hathors via Tom Kenyon are extremely helpful in this) if you try the Hathors or others that provide actual tools and NEVER TRY TO DICTATE YOUR THOUGHTS or ACTIONS, never tell you what to think or how to live, you may find that you feel stronger in your own power, which is freedom.The P's give lower level "rules to live by" which, for me Feels like mind control. This book provides instruction which sounds like "Limited thinking" anxiety & stress was the result of my reading this book and I chose not to continue with Barbara's information.Please be careful, following instructions distracts you and prevents you from feeling your own power."the abode of the Deity is the home of limited thinking. The Deity, or that which you worship, always gives you limited thinking so you can be managed" (quote from this book)

I have really enjoyed this book, I'm sure some may see it as strange New Age involving aliens which it does, but stop and think about the world we're living in, we need a perspective from outside the rat race humanity has gotten itself into. This book offers understanding of many of the personal challenges I myself am dealing with as well as the chaos going on in the world governments. It offers answers in places that religion left me with none and yet it does not deny a person's belief in a higher intelligence. I would recommend this book for anyone struggling with day to day life who has not felt fulfilled with what religion offers, this gives us a view of the bigger picture, and that offers hope and stability. All of Barbara Marciniak's books offer hope and understanding for the chaos of these times.It offers a purpose for us as humans beings struggling in the world as it is today. Read it with an open mind and you'll understand the bigger picture.

This is one of Barbara Marciniak's early books, but the best ever book to get you started on the wisdom of the Pleiadian information. They are here to help us us through these changing times that are unfolding at the present. It will challenge your belief system and do doubt alter it. I found it best absorbed if I only read one chapter at a setting...giving ones mind a chance to process what it had read. I have read all of her books, which are channeled by the Peiadian and wished I would have read this one first. Nevertheless this should be a must read to anyone searching for spiritually, to know oneself, and to learn where our roots lie. It is very well written and an easy read.

.Thank you once again, Barbara and The P's, for a marvelous, mind-opening (and mind-blowing) tale!I loved "Bringers of the Dawn," and although I was less captivated by "Earth," I found "Family of Light" to be easily the most readable and accessible of the three Pleiadian books by Barbara Marciniak. This is one that I can share with friends and family who found "Bringers" too intimidating."Family of Light" is very specific to our current time, and is more direct and understandable than Barbara's previous two books, but is certainly no less powerful. The energy comes through loud and clear (I even found it to be very visual) and the stories are captivating and easy to follow. By contrast, "Bringers" seemed more abstract, esoteric, and "far out" (although I loved it nonetheless).Those of us who have been privileged to witness Barbara chanelling in person will immediately recognize the familiar playful Pleiadian intensity in "Family of Light." Read it, and be transformed :-)

Towards the end of the book, I had that feeling that the pages rewrote themselves just for/because of me. Amazing. Yet that is the way it is when one accepts the reality of time travel. Actually, time travel is just what simultaneity looks like from a linear perspective.

I got this book to read and also purchased the audible version and have discovered it is the missing piece of my own education. I played the audible version several times as it goes rapid pace but was convenient. It is sad to discover that many of Carter Goodwin Woodson's fears have been and continue to be realised in the racial disparity widely noted against the black skin worldwide. Although Mr. Woodson concentrated his criticism on the American social structure of his time, one of his truisms (shortened for this review) plays out daily in today's social responses: “If you can control a man’s thinking, you don’t have to worry about his actions ... and if you can make a man believe that he is justly an outcast, you don’t have to order him to the back door, he will go to the back door on his own and if there is no back door, the very nature of the man will demand that you build one.” Carter G. Woodson was not fully appreciated for his contributions whether some of those were impractical or not and that is not surprising; most brilliant minds are revered posthumously (and perhaps never fully understood). As the son of a slave one must admire Mr. Woodson's capacity to rise above his circumstances as well as his ability to see the issues that plague black people with laser-like accuracy. When reading this book, the reader can only but shake their head in silent acknowledgment of the truths stated therein. Another book that won't find its way into the general / 'public' library of American literature but which should be read by anybody trying to unravel the reasons black progress appears at times to be constantly stymied.

This is not the original publication of this book! It also does not state state which version or publication it is so buyer beware. When compared to the original publication in 1933 its is not in any way similar. I would not recommend it. I would instead recommend going to your local bookstore for a real copy of Woodson work, this is a fabrication.

it's formatted like an e-book but one of my questions is is it like the first edition? That part I'm not sure of as it doesn't specify in the book or the ad. It's not a big paperback like I expected it to be but maybe that's because I expected it and it wasn't a big book to begin with. EDIT: I got a hold of the publishers of this book and this book is not abridged also IT IS TAKEN FROM THE FIRST EDITION/PUBLISHING WITH NO EDITS OR OMISSIONS .

This book could have been written as an indictment of some contemporary school districts. Carter G. Woodson had a crystal clear understanding as to how the educational system of his time period was failing to properly educate young black children. This was written during the early part of the twentieth century, barely two generations after the abolition of slavery. Everything was an uphill struggle, but most blacks knew that without a decent education, there was no way black people could advance as a group. He points out in his book the many systemic factors that lent itself to the intentional miseducation of the children of color in the public school system. A fascinating work, and still timely, considering the problems that the public school system is still having nationwide, especially in the urban areas.

I could not put it down once I began to read it, because it reminded me of so much of what I needed in my growth and developement was not made available to me as a young person of color growing up in a segregated society, and many of those who think that we have arrived at a color-blind point in America need to read this book, and then compare it to what is happening with us today. The author was relevent then in his revelations and in his effort to open eyes and minds to the lack of knowledge of self, and is more relevent now, because, too many educated people of color find it even harder to succeed in today's job market and the available employment opportunities. We still allow others to control almost every aspect of our lives, including what we are to learn, think, and accept from the world in which we live and the institutions which influences the minds of our children. Morover, we continue to consume more of what others produce for us than what we produce for ourselves. It is time we become producers and traders of goods and services in this nation and in our communities, and we should insist that our children be taught skills that will help them to become self-sufficient and self-reliant. A college education means nothing if you cannot do more than just make a living, and if what you have studied is not marketable for more than teaching the same to someone else. Help someone to learn to produce something or provide a service that is needed by others in a world that is forever changing.

I gave this book four stars. The reason I gave this book a good rating, because the problems I read in this book about the mis education of the negro, still exists today. For example, black people still don't show one another respect especially if he or she has prosper in life. Black people still cannot take order from another black person for some reason but when you put a white person in charge, blacks will listen without no problems. Also black people do not have confidence in themselves and want to depend on the government ,which still make you a slave because you put in the hard work, you can accomplish anything in life. I'm a black man and I see this everyday and I'm sick of it. We don't shop we each other because we don't trust each other and blacks love to keep other blacks down instead of helping. I hope one day we can all come together but for right now, I know I sound pessimistic but it's not happening. Black people in the early centruy will be ashamed to see how the black people act today.

My son really enjoys these books. He laughs often while reading them. Nate seems to get in trouble at school often so I suppose he's not the best example for kids. I've talked to my son about this aspect and he seems to keep it in perspective. I prefer Diary of a Wimpy Kid over the big Nate series.

I do know, after volunteering in an elementary school library that the kids like this author.

I loved reading this book as it was vey funny and interesting.If you are sad or lonely,Big Nate is sure to cheer you up and bring laughter in every page!

This review is more about my thoughts on the Big Nate series as a whole; not this book in particular.As odd as it may seem, I'm a 34 year old who likes this character for some reason. I think Lincoln Peirce's character Big Nate is better than Jeff Kinney's Greg Huffley from the Wimpy Kid books, but I think the fact that there are 2 to 3 Big Nate releases each year is part of the reason I'm a little burned out on these books. I think I have around 27 of these now (can't believe it's that many already!) and I've had so much trouble finding the motivation to read the last few I've purchased.I can't say it's a time issue because anyone can get through one of these books in maybe a half an hour. But at the same time, I don't find myself re-reading any of these books. In fact, I don't think I've reread ANY of these books. I think a child would be much more apt to re-read these, even with the idea that their attention spans are supposedly shorter than adults. I mean I get it; I'm not the target audience here.So, while I still love the characters and the world Lincoln has created, I feel the need to stop buying these. Additionally, I talked to a co-worker at work who has a grandchild and offered up my backlog of Big Nate and Wimpy Kid books to her grandchild. That was kind of awkward to ask without feeling and seeming kind of creepy, but I honestly think a child can get more out of these books than me given they just sit on my bookshelf. Am I ashamed to own these books given my age? No, I don't think so. Again, I think the quality of Perice's characters and world can be appreciated by anyone of any age, but I think the medium of prose is holding me back.This isn't to say I don't want to read, but in the last few years I think music has become the most important form of media to me. Compared to movies, video games and books, music can be enjoyed passively while doing something else. That's incredibly important to me these days because I'm usually multitasking in general. Again, I have free time, but I don't want to be glued to one thing extensively. Additionally, music has become important to me because some of my leisurely activities center around music. I love writing about the songs and albums I enjoy so music ends up killing a few birds with one stone for me.So, yeah, I think I'm going to stop buying these. It's neither a quality issue nor gripe against the author. I hope the series goes on to live a lengthy lifespan. It's just a choice I have to make in regards to which media I get the most out of.

I ordered this for my nephew. It was just what he wanted. He was so excited to get it. He loves books like this!

Beautifully written. A quality book that is mesmerizing and hard to put down. We highly recommend this book to anyone.

This book has many of his iconic photos plus the stories behind them. The print quality is excellent, probably as good as the prints in his Iconic book and they are large prints. You will spend many hours to finish it. This book is a bargain!

Gave it as a gift to my grandson who loves photography. He really likes it!

This is a missed opportunity - there is not nearly enough here on McCurry's approach to photography. While some of the stories are compelling, the stories are second-hand, not written by Steve, and they often feel distant. While the photographs are amazing, there is far too much space give over to copies of his travel documents - page after page of these. What a waste of space! This space should have been devoted to more great images. Or there could have been more alternate images that didn't become featured, and he could have discussed what worked with some but less so with others - this would truly make for an insightful, educational experience. There is a section like this with an alternate version of the famous Afghan girl. There could have been more of these.

Such a beautiful book. I've always loved McCurry's photography. This book has amazing print quality and fascinating information about some of the more interesting periods in McCurry's increadile career. Must own for any fan the the real golden age of Nat Geo.

WARNING: The paperback edition is not the same as the hardback edition. They really shouldn't be listed together. The paperback edition has a big sign on the back of the book stating, "This is a special version of a textbook widely used by universities throughout the world. Pearson published this edition for the benefit of students outside the United States and Canada. If you purchased this book within the United States or Canada it has been imported without the approval or permission of the Publisher, and it does not include all of the same Problems." The Amazon product description did not disclose these important differences, and none of the third-party sellers seem to disclose this difference. As a result, I purchased the book, and it turned out my son couldn't use it for his class because, according to his Physics teacher, eight of the problem sets are different. Argh.

I used this book for two semesters of physics; I didn't like it. I found the explanations lacking and non-intuitive, and not many tips how to solve problems, but also the equations are not listed clearly. I found my self going on youtube and reading knight-jones-field college physics book as a supplement just to figure out what the book was trying to say.To give an example of why I didn't like this book: In chapter 22 under Energy in EM waves, the author makes zero attempt to help you understand notation. I had no clue what a rms value was. Only after looking online did I find out that if you use the rms valuesthe S ----> S(avg).

This is the physics book that a relative is currently using in his high school, and it is absolutely terrible. I often have to help him, and this book always leaves me scratching my head at how they get from point A to point B. I am no lightweight, either. I got straight A's in physics when I was in high school, and passed the AP exam, and I am a teacher now. If I am struggling so much, that means there is something wrong.Each section starts out with lots of background text, aka fluff that isn't going to help at all with grasping the concepts. Unfortunately, this background sometimes goes right in to the descriptions of formulae and the concepts of the lesson, so it is difficult to skip. Luckily, the formulae are in bold, so they are at least easy to see on the page. But you have to read through the text to understand what they mean, and the text is so poorly written that you often have to read through over and over again just to wrap your head around the formula and what they are trying to say about it.This brings me to the example problems. For what they are, they are fine, and they often make the concepts easier to understand than the actual lesson. So I have no real complaints about the examples that are included. They are just sorely inadequate, which I will explain next.The real glaring problem with this physics course is the problems that students have to do. They take the basic concepts (which students probably didn't even fully grasp in the first place because the lessons are so poorly done), and escalate them to impossible levels. It's fine to ask students to think outside the box, but asking them to think outside the box without anything similar even mentioned in the lesson, almost no information given, and having to combine formulae in crazy ways is just absurd. The book does not prepare them for that in any way. It's like learning to swim in a pool (the lesson) and then being thrown into the middle of the ocean while a storm is raging (the problems). One problem that still sticks out to me asks the student to calculate the Bernoulli forces on a house with a flat roof of given area in a certain speed wind (no information besides flat roof, roof area, and wind speed). The problem was, the lesson had not even gotten close to explaining that kind of thing. It had briefly mentioned Bernoulli forces on airplane wings and spheres, but all of it was about pressure and different flow rates. There wasn't even a suggestion about calculating forces with only one flow rate. And there were lots of other problems with the same problem. I have eventually been able to figure out most of them by careful reading and creative combinations of formulae, but not all. And the amount of effort that these problems required of me, someone who has already learned and understood this stuff and who wrestles with math formulae pretty frequently, is just absurd. If these problems are so difficult for me to do, imagine how much worse they must be for the students who have never done it before.I do not recommend this book. If you are a teacher, homeschooler, administrator, school board, or anyone else choosing curriculum and trying to do well by their students, do not select this book. It is a horrible excuse for a learning resource, and will only set students up for failure and disillusionment with science. A great teacher may be able to compensate for some of this, but don't rely on that. And if the teaching is great, how much better will students learn if they also have a great book. So go and find that great book. Do not buy this!

I needed a text to review physics in preparation for the state licensing exam. I went online to find reviews and Giancoli was the top rated for non calculus based AP physics. I also used Holt and Cutnell and Johnson. I found Giancoli to be the best of them. Concepts are fully explained with no corners cut. Towards the end of chapters they often have real world application examples. There are many problems that get systematically more difficult and are rated by difficulty so that it is easy to find beginner, intermediate and advanced problems. Solutions are provided for the odd numbered problems.I tutor so I generally use the book that the student's class is using. I find that I frequently turn to Giancoli for better problems and clearer examples to show the students. It is the best non-calculus text I have seen. I suppose the best indicator is that I enjoy using it. I don't find myself on guard for the next mistake or poor explanation or missing link in the thought chain. It is a pleasure to use.I found the other books lacking. Holt seemed to be a template to push teachers to purchase products and services. It is somewhat like Windows 8. It is clearly a product of too many MBAs and not enough educators. I am still trying to understand the appeal of Cutnell and Johnson. I find it has holes in the progression of the topic. It does not have the rigor of Giancoli.Regarding Hewitt and Halliday and Resnick. Hewitt deserves its fame as a great conceptual physics book. However I would like to see more problems included.I learned physics from the second edition of Halliday and Resnick. I recently used the 7th edition while working with a student. I am still getting to know this edition. What I like is that it is detailed and certainly has better and more examples than what I learned on. It also has more photos and color photos - a vast improvement :) So far so good. I will do a detailed comment on it after I have had more time.

This textbook was a lifesaver. My school uses a REALLY bad textbook. You should probably take calculus if you are using this textbook. Yes, you don't need it, but I thought the concepts were easier to grasp because of calculus. (although it just might be because I hate algebra's long methods as opposed to easy calc) Idk, but this saved me on every exam.
