I read this book at a time when l was feeling depressed about limitations associated with aging. It put my cares in perspective. I did feel the last few chapters are mostly lists, but that was what was important to her. She wrote this book while still in college. How much more she achieved in the rest of her life.

I read this in 7th grade (45+ years ago) - but it was well worth the re-read.Miss Keller was an amazing woman. Just reading and understanding thatthings were so much simpler then, but the strides being made to help folkswas great. There were several leads to other patients & researchers tofollow up on — which always makes me happy when a subject interests me.

Ms. Keller writes of a life that seems fairly commonplace. She doesn't seem to realize how remarkable her accomplishments are. I suppose given the constraints on her observations of life around her she wasn't able to give any comparisons to other's struggles to try and accomplish what she does. So her story lacks depth. I have read other accounts of Helen Keller's life that I found fascinating. This was supposed to be illustrated but there were no pictures in this book. I was unable to finish this.

I have read the entire Mitford series multiple times and have all the books in hardback, but also read the covers off a set of paperbacks. I just started reading them on Kindle and still find the stories to be so fresh and uplifting. They take me to a place I want to live. Can't wait to start the next book... again!

If population statistics were normalized, Helen Keller's STORY OF MY LIFE would rank among the most popular/translated books of the last 150 years. I believe I once read that, after the Bible, it was for a time the most common book in the American home. And with good reason. All the more reason to applaud this "Restored Classic" edition; no mere reprint, instead is is a multi-layered and multi-angled presentation of the original text edited by Roger Shattuck with Dorothy Herrmann. For me, besides the historical information contextulaized Keller's long and variegated career, the most moving revelations are the supplementary accounts by Anne Sullivan (her teacher) and John Macy (Sullivan's husband). I recommend these, especially Sullivan's "Letters and Reports", to any reader interested in pedagogy in many a field including but hardly limited to "special ed". The Forward, the Appendices, the Notes, the Afterword --- I can't speak highly enough of this disciplined and empassioned variety of scholarship. For teachers who may be feeling -- at whatever stage in ther careers, somewhat lost at sea, this is bedrock material and ground to stand on.

This was an amazing young lady, I have visited her home in Florence, and was very amazed with the place and the story about her life. If you get a chance to go to Florence, Ala. DO so you want regret it.

The copyright page states that this is a work of fiction??? "This book is a work of fiction and any resemblance to any person, living or dead..." What's with that? Also, this copy has no dedication to Alexander Graham Bell. It is poorly put together as one has to pull the pages back as the type disappears into the binding. Is this a pirated copy? Shame on Amazon!

To read these books is to become one with the characters. The stories & spiritual insight speak so directly to the lives we live, it's as if God is continually guiding us to better understanding of what He wants for us. I love these stories.

Psychoanalysis has always understood its principal theoretical terrain to be that of sex. In recent decades sex is a land that has receded from view below the tidal shift to gender theory; feminists and gender theorists heralded gender as socially and linguistically constructed and demoted sex as a category to the side of so-called biological fact or essentialism, leading to today's well-known dictum that sex is biological, gender is cultural. In short, gender theory participated in and eventually became the epicenter of a wider revanchism of Manichaen thinking in the theoretical humanities, one that sets the principle of construction against the principle of essence, of culture versus biology.One can now ask, as Zupancic does here, whether psychoanalysis-- and Freud and Lacan specifically-- set sex on the side of biology, as gender theorists claim, or whether they asked how sex and sexual pleasure disrupt both the acculturation and the biology of the organism. Why, Freud asks, do pleasure and enjoyment seemingly guide us to such errant destinations? Indeed, when one looks closely, there appears hardly anything "natural" about sex! The very problem of sexed reproduction-- and it IS a problem standing in need of explanation, since other forms of reproduction are ready-to-hand in this world-- is a problem of extreme evolutionary inefficiency and complexity (a species would have much better chances of survival if it didn't force its members to meet and perform a set of acts together in a given timeframe). Freud named this organic inefficiency, complexity, and inertia that is inherent to sex and pleasure: death drive, a ceaseless pressure to "return to the inorganic."Zupancic's book usefully unfolds a number of themes and debates around the fate of this "frontier-concept" of Freud's, and one could profitably read "What IS Sex?" alongside and against efforts by other contemporary theorists such as Catherine Malabou and Paolo Virno who seek not to oppose history and nature (as Barthes once had) but to interdigitate the two in an extremely precise (i.e., negative, apophatic) way: to endow the body with a mythological organ. Witness, for example, Zupancic's provocative defense of the phallus as a Lacanian concept, when otherwise both feminists and queer theorists have beaten a retreat from such allegedly biologizing language.This is, in short, a must-read book. But for whom? The title suggests a far wider audience than probably exists. The Short Circuits series in general suffers from inadequate editing, with issues that range from numbering errors and pronoun confusion to more mind-boggling printing mistakes in particular Lacanian formulae; "What IS Sex?" bears some of that, but the real impediment is the sense I had while reading of being thrown into a semi-private language. Zupancic gives very little, almost nothing, in the way of introductory set-up or framing to the issues of her address, largely leaving readers to puzzle out why she has chosen the particular paths and questions she has. Readers already keyed into this dialogue and vernacular will find much that is richly synthesized and developed in these brief pages, including a much needed revisitation and extension of the encounter between Deleuze and Lacan (via Badiou) that seems in comparison merely sketched in Zupancic's earlier (and excellent) "The Odd One In." This makes it a helpful shorthand and decisive contribution for those already up to speed, but others may find themselves at a loss as to how the work came together and what motivated its presentation. This is a very different reading experience from that of Zizek, where one sometimes gets the feeling of too much framing, and so it is both for better and worse that Zizek's companion volume, "Incontinence of the Void," provides a good bit of scaffolding and context to Zupancic's work (this back-and-forth is a stylistic accomplishment in its own right, but this review is for this book). I recommend working through both to get a fuller sense of the compass and radicality of psychoanalysis and its theory of sex and nonrelation, especially as it is understood by those in the orbit of the "Slovenian School."

Zupancic recontextualizes the argument around sex and gender in a Hegelian/Lacanian perspective via a traidick structure (master signifier of gender/symbolic gender/gender in the real). The hard thrust of her arguments starts where Buttlers end, butt through it’s intercourse, recontextualizes the issues at play in a manner that has aroused new territory in this field, yielding brilliant new insight into a hot and hard topic. Zupacic cums to the conclusion ultimately that sex is the outgrowth of the ever present lack out of the signifying/symbolic elements that are preasant in our ontology. I am slowly collecting the whole series of these to read to my kids during breakfast instead of letting them watch a TV show. My 5-year old especially loves them. I will usually play some of the pieces mentioned throughout the week. Last night, my daughter was running around trying to find this book because she heard Brahms' Lullaby on her baby sister's toy and she wanted to show her dad that she had learned about the composer. They are written on a good level to appeal to a wide range of early to later elementary kids.

Simple and basic intro to this composer for younger children. I don’t love the illustrations, but overall it’s fine for the price.

As a teacher, I love this series! My goal is to teach my 3rd graders about the famous artists and composers. This series makes it easy, fun, and interesting!

Great book. It brought Brahms to life for my young music historian.

I love this series. As an adult, it's a quick way to learn a lot about artists or composers. I left this on our kitchen table and found my 8-year-old son cuddled up on our sofa with it a half hour later, laughing and showing me one of the illustrations. This is an excellent book!

This book wasn't quite what I expected as I was hoping for something that may help me work with athletes. Some of these tips will be easily applied to my athletes but the true value will be as I hire and develop interns and assistants in the future. I was also able to come away looking at my place of employment a bit differently and looking at a bigger picture instead of what was right in front of me. I definitely think this is a useful book!

I am reading this required book as part of a curriculum in a Pastoral Training session. The book before this one, "Developing the Leader within You" was more readable at a better pace. For whatever reason, this book has started off slow and just went down hill from there. True, maybe it is just a mindset, and maybe I have to totally isolate myself from other distractions! The time frame given us to read these books are only a month, which is not near enough time to put any of these ideas into practice. John Maxwell, learned these lessons over a lifetime of being in management and being a Senior Pastor. I realize at some point I will have to put some or all of his words into action, but just not right now! As I am neither in a position or job to effectually put them to good use. On the brighter side, if you are looking to advance in the corporate structure, or to become part of the hierarchy of a religious organization, this is good reading. Enjoy

I had to buy this for a book review at A&M, but I'm very glad I did. Very good book with some epic advice for bringing out the best in others. Everyone in leadership positions should have to read his series. Just saying.
