About the Author

Dr. David M Kaniecki, DNP, MSN, ACNP-C, RN, CCRN is an acute care nurse practitioner (ACNP) for the Cleveland Metro Life Flight Team where he is responsible for the management of acute and chronically ill or injured patients requiring transport via helicopter, fixed wing, or ground ambulance. David first began his nursing career in 2005 after obtaining an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from North Central State College. He later obtained the Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) in 2012 and Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) in 2017 from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) where he maintained a 4.0 GPA. David has practiced in a variety of critical care settings and cared for patients of many disease pathologies and traumatic injuries. Before becoming an ACNP, he worked as a staff nurse in the surgical intensive care unit (ICU), medical ICU, neurological ICU, cardio-vascular ICU, coronary ICU and ICU float pool. With the skills acquired from his experiences in the inpatient hospital setting, in 2008, he became a flight transport nurse for the Cleveland Clinic Critical Care Transport Team to practice in unorthodox environments and later joined the Cleveland Metro Life Flight Team in 2015. David has transported patients who require extreme levels of life support to a higher level of care both in the United States and globally. David has also worked to share his knowledge and experience with students and others in the healthcare field. He authored the book Operation Flight Nurse: Real-Life Medical Emergencies to educate its readers using real-life critical experiences. He has served as a lab instructor, advanced practice skills instructor, guest lecturer, and current faculty ACNP and Flight NP/RN instructor at CWRU. Dr. Kaniecki is a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) and has numerous certifications and credentials including: Ohio Board Certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Ohio Board Certified Registered Nurse, CCRN (Critical Care Registered Nurse), Advanced Trauma Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation, Basic Life Support, and NIH Stoke Scale Certified.

This is a great read! Especially for someone who is not necessarily comfortable with medical situations or jargon. David does a great job explaining what is happening in each of his stories both on the pathology and intervention side. As a critical care nurse, I found that I wanted more information at times but was able to surmise those tiny details that he left out to make an idea more understandable. Each story played as it's own entity so many concepts are explained more than once throughout the book which makes this a great read if you aren't comfortable with complex medical situations.

I had just finished reading Trauma Junkie by Janet Hudson, and at first I was disappointed in this book because it lacked the excitement and drama. After I had read a few scenarios however, I began to get interested. There was a lot of good information clearly presented and I found it very useful to read. Even after 25 years as an ICU and ER nurse I learned a couple of new things. I will read both books again.

I love this book. I have been collecting books about the real life of nurses in their chosen fields and this was another great addition to my books. I love to read and I love nursing, so this is a great combination of both.

Fantastic book that I can closely relate to in my professional work as an Advanced Practice Critical Care Transport Paramedic in south eastern Michigan. Stories of triumph and defeat. I recommend this book to my new trainee paramedics. It gets them critically thinking about situations they may not have encountered yet on various approaches. Nicely written sir!

Great relating of each scenario, simple explanations to help the lay reader, refreshing and direct to those of us in EMS.

This book is so great! I am a pre-nursing student trying to figure out what type of nursing I would be interested in and this book gives such great detail and really breaks down concepts I have not learned yet. Also has amazing pictures to go along with what is being written. Simply amazing book would recommend it for anyone interested in nursing! This book makes me want to be a flight nurse :)

I was considering air-care flight but did not know many of the fine details of such a rewarding career...this book puts you in the real-live situation and was not put down until finished!! Great book!!
