This is an incredible book. The author's self-disclosure, personal parenting stories and talent for explaining neuroscience in a dignified, non-pandering way to the reader are stunning. As a doctor and a mother with a family history of untreated anxiety and heavy addictions, I was panicking as I saw the tween years approaching as to how to stack the odds so my boys did not become prey to these issues.I'm recommending this book to the parents of every child I see, regardless of age. Thank you to Dr. Shatkin for taking the time to write this and for doing so in a way that is valuable in terms of doctoring and parenting. It will change the way I do both.
Dr. Shatkin’s book is based on science and at the same time is very easy to read. Dr. Shatkin debunks myths in healthcare and guide us to do what science indicates it works: from parenting interventions, physical activity, limiting access to “screensâ€, to the benefits of mindfulness and gratitude. Born To Be Wild by Jess Shatkin is one of those books that percolates after you’ve read it. Dr. Shatkin expertly weaves well-known notions of adolescence and parental guidance strategies with cutting edge neuroscience and novel interpretations of economists’ theories on decision-making using compelling vignettes. While it is easy to resonate with Dr. Shatkin’s comfortable and non-defensive disclosures as a teen and a parent, the book also pulls for reflection on one’s own decisions in ways that can catch you off guard. As a parent of now young adults who made it through adolescence on quite different trajectories I can see how valuable this book would have been to me had it been written earlier. As a professional in child and adolescent mental health I plan to recommend this book to parents well before their children become teens. Given the substantive nature of Born to be Wild’s many lessons I expect this book to be a resource for many years to come.

What I love about Dr. Shatkin’s book is that he uses humor and personal stories to explain complex concepts such as the neuroscience behind why teenagers take risks. This not only makes the book fun to read, but it makes these complicated concepts understandable. What makes this book so valuable is that it illustrates how to apply the science in “real life.†For example, Shatkin shows how most parents inadvertently go wrong in talking to our kids about risky situations. He then gives specific examples of the “right†language to use to talk to your teenagers about risky behavior. I’m already starting to use the suggested “conversations†with my high-school daughter and wish I had this book when my older two kids were teenagers.

I never review anything, but I always read reviews. I'm horrible person that way. Any way! I have been waiting for this book, since Cassy sent out an email to her newsletter subscribers about a big announcement. And it was this book! Then she shared sneak peaks and behind the scenes shots of cooking for the book on Snapchat, then you got a few sneak peeks on the blog, and the eBook for snacking. So by the time, I got my hands on this book, I felt like I had tag along with her in away for this book! And it did not disappoint! I'm still going back and reading the health chapters more thoroughly, because there is a lot of information and its broken down in a way that is not scary at all. I have recipes with sticky notes already for what I'm going to be making from the book for next weeks meals. I am excited to try all of these amazing looking and sounding recipes. If you have any food issues, she shares what to omit or swap out to make it fit for you. Honestly, you can't ask for more of a cohesive, well planned book to guide you through a healthy lifestyle!
This book is a work of art. It contains absolutely everything one might think of when trying to design a cookbook + nutrition guide in one. I'm amazed she was able to put all of this together. It must have taken eons. I've been trying to eat healthier for a long time. I'm fairly trim, but I I rely A LOT on artificially sweetened protein shakes and bars. I'm hoping this plan, which is essentially paleo, will be transition me into better habits.Her book includes:- A 28-day plan that is conveniently illustrated for every single day (see photo)- A routine where lunches come from the previous night's dinner (so much more realistic than cooking 2 meals every night so that lunch is ready to be transported the next morning)- The ability to switch out any meal for a simplified, quicker option: basic protein, basic veggie, basic starchy vegetable or fruit)- Full caloric information for everything along with macros and clear guidelines on portion sizes (she doesn't say you need to pay attention to calories but she includes that information)- A fitness program that I haven't even begun to look into- A daily journal template to copy- An entire section of the book devoted to cultivating the right mindset so that readers feel motivated- Great illustrations (paper book is much more beautiful than Kindle)..... And more....Not only does she have all the things I look for in a food plan, but I appreciate her food and diet philosophy. She makes it very clear that these are guidelines and not harsh rules. Although she recommends that everyone avoid refined flour in their day-to-day diets, she explains the importance of personalization: some people will want to reintroduce dairy, corn, legumes, and even natural sugar. And she fully understands that it's silly to make any food, including flour, "illegal" because it's natural to want to participate in holidays and celebrations. Basically, she puts the reins in the hands of the reader. This is SO important. One of the main reasons people rebel against food plans is because someone else's set of rules has been forced upon them. I know that I subconsciously don't like being told what I can and can't eat. I want guidelines and tools, not rules. And that's what she gives us!I'll admit I haven't started the 28-Day Project yet aside from cooking some of the basic proteins and vegetables. I'm a huge believer in taking small, sustainable steps. I probably won't start the fitness regime for another week. But to quote her: "You (too) are still IN the Project! I want to meet you where you are."
Paleo cooking was what I wanted info about and this book surely provides it. Lot of wonderful lists, charts, and advice along with many recipes to get me inspired. The only part of the book I found difficult was the exercises. I am 80 years old, and these exercises are for a much younger person. Take away the exercises and the book is excellent, deserving 5 stars. The 28 day detailed menus along with appropriate recipes make the book worth the money. The book is hard-backed and well constructed, and looks good on my coffee table.
Cassy's book is awesome! I have made several recipes and they are all delicious! My husband is pretty picky and no complaints (only compliments) on these dishes! There are a lot of options so no need to worry about running out of things to make or if you will not like something. There is amazing info about so many things! Not to mention the exercise segment of the book. I have a program I typically go by but if you are new or coming back into exercise this is a simple and well presented way to get into it! If I want to do something different for the day, it is great for crossfitters as well!
I have never even reviewed anything on Amazon before (maybe anywhere). But this book deserves it! I received my copy last week and I have not put it down. The book is beautiful! I read through the entire first part about the program within 2 days of getting it and I'ive referred back to it every day. The recipes sound amazing but simple and beautiful. The book is beautifully written. The program is really going to be a game changer for me and so many people who want to find some food peace and a happy place with their daily diet. I love the workouts in the back too! Such an awesome idea. I can't say enough good things about this book! and Cassy is just adorable! Way to go Cassy!
I’ve had this book for a while now, and have easily cooked 70% if the recipes, and have not been disappointed with a single one! Have been mind blown by many of them! I know without a doubt whatever I cook out of this book will be delicious!! The program is great too, although I really just use it as a cookbook mostly. I’ve made something from this every week for almost 2 years!!
This has quickly become my favorite cookbook and I have a lot! I haven't really made anything from it I didn't like. My favorites are the asian cabbage rolls, stuffed acorn squash, and carnitas pork! The ketchup and sour cream recipes were pretty handy when doing Whole30. Highly recommend it if you are trying to eat gluten and/or dairy free.
