THIS BOOK IS SIMPLY FABULOUS. I utterly loved reading this book. It is truly profound in its wisdom of the human psyche. You could almost use this as a reference book in a psychology class. Lewis was undoubtedly gifted with a deep wisdom not granted to the rest of us. Frankly, moments of it are a bit difficult to read because you have to constantly invert what the demon is saying to pull away the positive lesson; that said, this book is VERY worth reading for ANY Christian. Lewis was an Anglican but he exposes universal Christian / Human truths here. One might argue that his theology (at least in this work) is nearly Catholic; but the simple fact of the matter is all Christians recognize that Angels and Demons are real and they are waging a spiritual battle around us and we are caught in the crossfire. Lewis exposes the many traps that we, as sinners, fall into and how our minds are often pigeonholed which merely compounds our problems. Lewis also exposes more than once how EVEN GOOD THINGS can be twisted and used for evil purposes if we aren't careful. As I said, every Christian (and frankly, non-Christians as well) should read this book.I cannot recommend this specific version of the letters highly enough. This annotated edition is very well made. The annotations are SUPERB. The author clearly knew Lewis's works in and out and was erudite in his own right. Frequent quotes in the margins from Lewis's other writings bring a wonderful richness not experienced if one only reads the text by itself. There are also helpful notes dealing with colloquialisms of mid-century British English which might be lost on American readers. I took quite a lot away from this book; the margins have sparked a strong desire in me to read his other works. I have half a mind to gift copies to people I know---but this specific version because of the notes. This is a book I will cherish the rest of my life and, in all likelihood, re-read once a year or so. In terms of the physical book itself, it is very well made with fine paper, nice margins, and a beautiful dust jacket. You get your money's worth.(PS- this copy DOES include Screwtape's Toast (epilogue to the letters) at the end, published after the initial letters themselves.)

Our Small Faith community group started to study the Screwtape Letters, but had so many questions about the language, and CS Lewis in particular. We found an annotated version on line as an ebook but it was difficult to go back and forth from the annotation number to the annotation itself.I found this new annotated copy which is much more comprehensive than the last. The annotations are on the same page as the corresponding number. They give so much more insight into the life of CS Lewis when he wrote the book and explain British phrases that were used in the 40's but have no meaning to someone now. I would recommend it for anyone interested in studying this book.

I've loved and been blessed by the Screwtape letters for many years, and have marveled at the wisdom and insight that God has given C.S. Lewis into the hearts and minds of people; of the struggles that EVERY human faces; and of the intricacies, craftiness, and diligence of Satan and his many minions. I've learned a lot about myself and how better to overcome the evil one and his ploys through Jesus, our Christ and Lord.And now, I am reading this wonderful annotated version replete with goodies. I love reading about Lewis' mental and physical process in writing this book; about the social and political goings-on that shaped his thinking, emotions, and writing; and about all the tidbits throughout the book that embellish and provide insight into these timeless letters.Paul McCuster has done an outstanding job annotating this book. It is a must read for all faiths, as well as all athiests and agnostics. Really. Give it a try.

Just received my copy and VERY impressed. Beautiful book. I know some have said the annotaions were distracting, but honestly, they are in small red print and the actual story is in large (which is very appreciated) bolder black print. Therefore, you can easily read the story through without looking at the side notes. Afterward, read the side notes (annotations). So there you go.

I wanted an annotated edition of this because -- well, I just did, and this one is beautiful. It's a nice copy and pretty and also easy to read. The annotation doesn't interrupt the flow at all, but it's clear. It is also not about the writings of CS Lewis on the whole, just about these letters, which is great for me. Others may want a more in-depth comparison that goes deep into all of the writings. This is not that book, but the Letters themselves are great to read again and again, and this copy is a beauty. It may be my favorite recent-ish purchase.

Difficult to access annotation info in Kindle Edition.

This book is not for the faint of heart. Though short, there is a ton of content in every sentence. Add the era that it was written, and it's not a book to be read while distracted or as you're falling asleep. Interesting perspective.

I'm one of those folks who don't enjoy reading fiction without lessons in there somewhere. One of our elderly ministers has been promoting the literature of C.S. Lewis for years. I bought this book thinking it would be very entertaining. It is, but in such an introspective way. A friend asked if it were an "easy read". Absolutely not! How anyone could have ever gotten so deeply into the minds of those of us who call ourselves Christians, I do not know. Lewis has certainly opened my eyes to my own vulnerability to the works of the Devil. I shudder to think what God would think were He to look into my eyes as the window to my soul!

(Those are my examples, most of them are not from this book.) I consider this book a pioneering, foundational and seminal text -- I'm amazed it hasn't been reviewed by more people. Given our desire to avoid the subject out of fear and misplaced "positive thinking," we need more books like this to paint the landmarks and fill in the various colors of the landscape of death and dying, especially very slow deaths by "the dwindles" that many elderly people experience now.

This book has been difficult to read, because facing death is difficult. The manner of our dying is as unique as the manner of our living, and having a choice in the way we spend our final days is important. This book gives a glimpse into the life of hospice physician, Dr. Ira Byock. In it, he shares the stories of patients (including his own father) and families who are "exploring the inherently human experience of dying."This is a GREAT read for those who are themselves dying, for people who are caring for someone who is actively dying, or for those who are searching for answers; death needn't be a painful, lonely experience.I was often moved by Dr. Byock's words of wisdom to his patients; that it was okay to die at home, surrounded by family, it was okay to stop eating and drinking if one wasn't hungry or thirsty, it was okay to hold onto those the things which define us; having our nails done, wearing nice pyjamas, smelling good, craving the touch of others, being read to, participating in conversations, feeling valued.More importantly, this book showed me that there is still a possibility to learn, to heal our minds and hearts, to forgive others and OURSELVES, to express love and compassion, and to find purpose and meaning behind our lives while dying or while caring for someone who is. Spending time with someone at the end of their life, whether the person is conscious or not, is beneficial to all parties involved.Please read this book, though you may need tissues...and perhaps a glass of wine.

This is written by a hospice doctor, giving us the benefit of his years of experience with the dying. The outstanding part of this book is his case study of individual patients and their families during the saga of death. Many a chapter brought tears to my eyes. And it also reads like a mystery story in that you turn the next page to see what is going to happen next. At the end of the book is an invaluable FAQ section (that was worth the price by itself).I bought the book so as to know how to better relate with relatives that have the big C. I was looking for some understanding of what they might be feeling and how to talk to them, things that I might do to ease their mental anguish rather than add to it by inept, uncaring action. This book delivers in all respects and is one you may re-read from time to time for its striking insights.All of us are in the process of dying, some of us are just closer than others - keep that in mind and buy this book.

Beautiful stories about how people have reached a sense of peace/growth/happiness at the end of their lives. It gave me hope while I was experiencing anticipatory grief and trying to be as supportive as possible as my best friend fought terminal cancer. However, it can be hard to realize that we are not able to help someone we love to "die well". Everyone dies on their own terms, and we are not in charge of their choices throughout their journey towards the end of life. I think I developed some unrealistic expectations as a result of reading this book. Either way, anything that can help families and loved ones begin to communicate about these challenging topics is a good thing in my book.

Very helpful and insightful about dying. It was helpful for my friend who was dealing with feeding tubes used on her crippled elderly mother. The feeding tube lasted five weeks until mucus and phlegm built up around tubing at nursing home and hospital. Mother was choking at times. Her lips were badly chapped and they replaced feeding tube and sadly she died three weeks after that, just feeding her meds and no food in the line the last two weeks. Heart was strong but suffering from stroke two months due to difficulty swallowing. Siblings could not agree unanimously not to insert feeding tube.

In the preface to this work, the editor, the compiler of several collections of urban legends, differentiates between "folklore in America" and "American folklore." American folklore is defined as stories, tales, mythology, and lore based on experiences unique to American history and the North American continent. This encyclopedia does not address such topics as European or African folklore, except in passing; instead it concentrates on phenonema that have become part of American culture. Topics range from rodeo and the Great Lakes to Elvis, "Xeroxlore," and UFOs.The overall tone of the book is scholarly. The editor suggests specific articles for readers interested in a scholarly survey: American Folklore Scholarship and Material Culture to provide background; treatments of Marxist or feminist approaches to the study of folklore; and Regional Folklore as an introduction to specific entries such as Appalachia, Rocky Mountains, Basque Americans, Dutch Americans, and so on. The articles, arranged in alphabetical order and varying in length from one paragraph to several pages, come from more than 200 contributors. Most of them are professors of American studies, English, anthropology, or folklore. Additional topics include people (fictional characters such as Paul Bunyan, folk singers, anthropologists), institutions (LC's American Folklife Center), holidays, styles of folklore (proverbs, tongue twisters), games, arts and crafts, musical forms, historical eras (New Deal, Atomic Age), the paranormal, and folklore unique to special groups or situations: truckers, disasters, hunting, academic life. Information is current; several entries refer to tales circulating over the Internet.While maintaining an academic approach, some of the articles are also humorous. In his article on cow tipping, Ed Zotti wonders why the scientific community has yet to launch a major investigation into the physical feasibility of this activity, despite the abundance of supposed participants. Computer Folklore contains several amusing examples. References to scholarly literature are listed at the end of each article. Limited see also references direct readers to related entries, and a general index is provided. Black-and-white photographs accompanying the text include pictures of folk ceremonies, examples of crafts, and traditional occupations, such as dowsing.This work is more inclusive than popular works that organize information according to historical period, such as American Folklore and Legend (Reader's Digest, 1978) or Richard M. Dorson's America in Legend (Random, 1973). Coverage is more comprehensive than in Folklore on the American Land by Duncan Emrich (Little, Brown, 1972), which classifies folklore by literary style (tall tales, proverbs, etc.). Excellent reference from one of the dogs of the Folklore world. Folklore is beginning to take the stage and it's import is being recognized. Brunvand offers a well educated perspective.

Anyone who's ever been involved in the production of a specialized encyclopedia knows the possible pitfalls and realizes it's nearly impossible to avoid all of them. This volume suffers from relying on a few contributors who have not developed a strong grounding in the areas they cover. These are uncritically written and occasionally misleading. Certain other entries are inflated with trendy jargon that makes them unreadable and uninstructive. Other articles, however, by creaful scholars of long experience, are of very high quality. They are accessible to college freshmen (or so one hopes) while providing a concise overview for the serious researcher.The book is abundantly illustrated with photos, though some of them--like the full-page pictures of Elvis, Davy Crockett, and a fig-leaf wearing strongman--obviously have been selected primarly for their sales appeal. Others--like the full-page photo of an Anglo-American lady who sang a version of "Barbara Allen" and the full-page Currier & Ives of "The Angel of Prayer"--contribute very little.While it's impossible to include everything and everybody, there are some striking omissions here. "John Avery Lomax" gets his due, but there's no article on Alan (though he does appear several times in the index). "Jazz" and "Blues" are entered, but "ragtime" is hardly mentioned. On the opposite side of the ledger, "Con artist" is treated, though the topic's special connection with "folklore" is not very obvious. There's no general article on "folk hero," but the big, familiar topics, like "Tall tales," "Folksong," "Ballad," "Legend," "Cowboys," "Folklore and American Literature," and so on, are covered at length, and biographies of numerous folklorists and collectors are included.An important innovation is the inclusion of long articles on minority-group folklore in the United States. Beside "African Americans" and "Mexican Americans," and other long-influential groups, there are articles on "Korean Americans" and "Basque Americans," and such non-ethnic minorities as "Gay Men" and "Lesbians."Overall, despite its inevitable lapses, this encyclopedia sets a new high standard for American folklore reference books. One hopes the next edition is even better.

The book is packed with insight that had radically changed my expectations about the process of launching a food company. The writer has saved me a lot of time and frustration in explaining what to have prepared for the "co-man" and a preparedness for how challenging it can be to find the right one and additional insights on the tricks of the trade.The author is an industry vet and not a professional author, but I found that a nice change of pace. It felt like he was just talking to a neighbor (who mentioned he wanted to start selling his family recipe BBQ at Whole Foods) and offering his straightforward advice from his career in the industry.

The book is a little shorter than I expected, but it's great because there's no filler content. It's short and to the point. And it's definitely worth so much more than it's selling price. The advice in this book will probably save you thousands of dollars and tons of time and headache (or heartache).
