We read this book every night. It is great for learning to count. My husband read the book initially and thought that the ladybugs died so he stopped a few pages in (It starts at 10 and counts down). If you make it to the end, all the butterflies come back together, so once I read it cover to cover and saw that, it was never a problem for us. Good thing too because it is one of my daughter's favorite books.

I have twin boys, and I bought them this book when they were about 10 months old. Here we are four months later, and I just bought a second book because they read the other one to pieces!! It was starting to look like a Frankenstein of torn pages and packaging tape, so I decided it was time to replace it. This was definitely their FAVORITE book, and believe me they had plenty to choose from.Upon my first reading, I remember thinking "Wow, this is incredibly morbid for a children's book.." because it seemed like the ladybugs were getting eaten, drowned, etc. However (spoiler alert, ha ha) they were fine in the end.Despite the fact that it is now in pieces, this is actually a pretty well-made book. It took quite awhile for them to tear it up, and that's saying something there. The ladybugs are attached to a larger plastic piece which is then glued in between the pages, ensuring that it won't be easily removed. The pages themselves are doubled card stock, with a glossy finish to protect them from drool.My boys loved touching all the ladybugs, and feeling that there were fewer as the book progressed. They also absolutely loved the high-color illustrations, and would frequently just sit there by themselves, paging through the book and looking at the pictures. For some reason, they would always laugh when we got to the picture of the fish, and I would start to point out the eyes, lips, etc.This is also a great book to make animal noises to (if your kids like that sort of thing) since it has a bee, bird, etc. Your child is pretty much guaranteed to love this book!

Whenever I visited them, my grandsons always ran to my book bag first to be sure I brought this book for them to look at. I would bring books to read to them, but this was their favorite--so I got one for them for Christmas. They are 3 and 4 yrs old, and love to use the bugs to count, as well as to look for the the other animals that interact with them. (Their cousins love it too!)

My one-year-old son pulls this book off the shelf at every opportunity. The pages are stiffer than paper but not as thick as a board book, so it's more like a big-boy book but he can still turn the pages himself.I like the way this book teaches counting but in a more subtle way than some of the all-out counting books that simply show "one cat, two socks," etc. It's an enjoyable, rhyming story that just happens to have numbers.To clarify, the nine animals that come along in the book are NOT predators, as another reviewer said they were. There is not just ONE ladybug that makes it home safely. They ALL are reunited at home on the last page of the book. The way I understand the book is that the 10 ladybugs are on an outing, and each one leaves the group with an animal friend (butterfly, caterpillar, etc.) who later takes him / her back home. Are the ladybugs lost and needing help to find their way home? Are they playing with the other animals and then eventually they all go home for supper? I don't have this answer. But please don't think that this book is a nature lesson about the food chain. No ladybugs are harmed in the reading of this book!

My daughter had an old copy of this book and loved it! She loves it enough that the book started falling apart. I ordered this and was pleased that it arrived in great addition. The story is cute and don't be alarmed, the lady bugs arrive safely at home!

This is an excellent book that promotes number sense and is simply enjoyable to read! The rhyming flows well and does not feel forced. Counting down from ten, each page features a number presented in both word form and standard form as part of the story. In addition, you can count the number of ladybugs each time you turn the page. By presenting the number in multiple ways, it really helps to build number sense for young children. I highly recommend this book. We've had it for two years, and my daughter still loves it!

An excellent 0-3 year old kids book. I have hundreds of kids book, 10LLB's is on my all time favorite list. I often include a copy in birthday presents and babyshower bags.I'm reviewing my third copy of the book, turns out 2 year olds are overly curious as to the origins of lady buys and dissect the books to discover all the hidden secrets.

In "Improvising Medicine: An African Oncology Ward in an Emerging Cancer Epidemic", Julie Livingston argues, “First, improvisation is a defining feature of biomedicine in Africa…Second, though cancer produces moments and states of profound loneliness for patients, serious illness, pain, disfigurement, and even death are deeply social experiences…Third, cancer in Africa is an epidemic that will profoundly shape the future of global health, raising fundamental policy, scientific, and care-giving challenges for Africans and the international community alike” (pg. 6-7).Livingston’s analysis provides for an interesting comparison between Botswana and the global north/Western world. She writes, “Healthcare (including oncology) is provided as a public good for citizens under a program of universal care. Most notably, Botswana has not accrued foreign debt, and so has been spared the predations of structural adjustment” (pg. 17). Despite this, Livingston cautions her readers against reading any utopian vision into oncology in Botswana. She writes, “Botswana’s position as an African nation that against all odds on the continent prioritizes universal healthcare and corporate capitalism simultaneously, and as a place where the cancer epidemic itself is in some part an outgrowth of a philanthropic project by Merck pharmaceuticals to extend the lives of those with HIV through the provision of antiretrovirals suggests a somewhat different, but not less compelling politics afoot” (pg. 171). Livingston contrasts this with Annemarie Mol’s discussion of similar systems from her book, "The Logic of Care". Livingston writes, “In Botswana, a country with universal access to healthcare for citizens, and with a historically deep and explicit understanding of care as a densely social dynamic, we encounter a particular pragmatics and an ethos of clinical medicine that at least partially diverges from what the philosopher Annemarie Mol calls ‘the choice model’ of healthcare” (pg. 153). Even with guaranteed healthcare, limited resources, physical distance to sites of treatment, and cultural views of medicine and pain management create a dynamically different situation than the one Mol described in "The Body Multiple", in which Dutch patients seek cutting-edge treatment for atherosclerosis at all stages of the disease and have a variety of options open to them, as well as a different cultural understanding of disease itself.A final interesting point Livingston makes deals with patient’s autonomy in the social culture of Botswana. Livingston writes, “There are several problems with fetishizing autonomy as progress, as some would do. First, there is a temporality to prognostic desire, even in places that privilege autonomy…Second, deeming autonomy as progress implies a uniformity of desire by patients within a particular national culture and historical epoch” (pg. 166). The social networks of Botswana only recently allowed the medical autonomy Americans expect in their doctor-patient interactions. Doctors in Botswana deprive patients of their autonomy in cases of terminal disease, instead socially distributing “to their kin through customs of prognostication that allow for frank, if brief, discussions with relatives, but not with patients” (pg. 159). Western patients expect medical control over the manner of their death in cases of terminal diagnosis, but this expectation does not exist in Botswana.

Anyone interested in medical anthropology can use this thoughtful and observant book. Livingston is the daughter of an oncologist and she states in the introduction: "In the face of many deaths I have witnessed since childhood, I have also questioned oncology's rituals, its liturgy, and the excesses to which blind faith and desperation can lead. . . . [In Botswana] I came to understand that while cancer with oncology was awful, cancer without oncology could be obscene."She puts the things she observes in the context of rising cancer rates in Africa and general unavailability of treatment, especially given forced-by-IMF privatization and expensive cancer drug patents. In a still-public hospital in Botswana which at least has an ethos of caring and an excellent oncologist, Livingston is, as she realizes, in one of the better possible settings in the environment, but the hospital staff struggles mightily with limited resources, hordes of patients, lack of treatment drugs and palliative drugs, and in general tremendous difficulties. How the patients and the staff manage and conceptualize things is astutely observed.Yet at the end the book leaves me touched, yes, but also angry about the marginalization of African health care and disease and about the drug patent system, as well as somewhat frustrated at how ephemeral any local gains can be without any sort of steady or rational progress, but grateful for people who are willing to deal with things as best they can regardless of that. And grateful for this fine book.

This is the last book for my graduate class reading. The story is very moving how it gave accounts of people's experiences going through cancer in Botswana in the late 90s to early 2000s. The epilogue also describes the cancer hospital in Zimbabwe. This book is about how doctors adapt their delivery of services under the constraints of lesser resources as cancer became an epidemia in Botswana. Truly, cancer has received lesser attention as HIV/AIDS became the center of attention worldwide although some form of the former is a complication of the latter. Some accounts are more morbid and horrific than others but all are equally hopeless and realistic. It is a documentation of reality when the poor struggle through cancer and lose their battle against it in the end. Sad, yet informative and not for the faint of heart. Now, I want to learn and read more about ethnography. On another note, I love that the pages of the hard copy resembles that of the Kindle version. What is exciting in the kindle version is the easy access to definition when some words are part of the medical jargon. I easily understood the meaning and appreciated more the context.

I read this book for my anthropology class and really enjoyed it. It was very well written and descriptive. This is a good read for entry-level college students.

This is an amazing, fascinating, heart wrenching book. A colleague recommended it to me for a class I'm teaching on Global Health and Development. Since I have tended to focus on general development more than health studies, I got a copy of this and was totally blown away when I read it. Great book for anyone interested in these issues!

I just didn't like the way the author thinks that screening for HIV is useless if you cannot pay for treatment. I think its very important. If we know, then perhaps we can take precautions to further spread it. Prevention is key.

I am not including this in my Christmas box of books for my 7 and 9 year-old grandsons. I am putting it in my car in case we ever have a "Nana, do you have any more books for us in here?" moment. What even marginally curious child would be intrigued by facts such as these: The SuperSoaker water gun was originally called the Power Drencher; Zucchinis are about 95 percent water; President Gerald Ford once worked as a park ranger; You can buy Thanksgiving-themed gumballs with flavors such as cranberry, turkey, and pumpkin pie...? This book does no credit to National Geographic, and I suggest that Amazon Shoppers leave out of their carts.

I LOVE this book. Bought copies for my 3 grandsons (ages 8 & 10) and one for myself. Filled with weird and interesting facts with excellent photos. I'm sure this could become a very popular book for kids and school libraries. I do feel there could have been footnotes sighting where the information/facts came from, or a link to find that info on-line. (Some of us like further "proof"). Highly recommended.

For a girl that loves animals and wants to some day become a veterinarian, this is the perfect funny book. My 10 year old is a true animal lover. She says that she wants to be a vet and change the way people view wild animals - and love on the tame ones. She finds this book hilarious and is constantly sharing one of the 300 weird but true facts. Some are hard to believe, but are apparently true. This books is definitely a win in our household and we are looking forward to another edition.

This is a great little book, we don't sit down and read it in one shot rather, I read one or two facts every day to my son. We have both been very entertained with his content, and I highly recommend purchasing this book if you would like to introduce some off-the-wall facts to your kiddo, and yourself :)

My teenager loves books of facts so by now we have all seven versions of this book. There are very few repeated facts between any of the books - he LOVES this series. The information is presented well and is interesting for all ages (at least in our family!). If trivia is your thing, this is the book for you.

My daughter loves to read facts about nature, animals etc. this book was great for her to have light reading and learn something about the world around her.

Love this book. My 9 year old granddaughter was told to practice her reading, so she reads this book out loud to me. We not only discuss the facts of "Weird but true" paragraphs, I also explain the meaning of words that she does not under stand. Provides great "together" time for us.

Purchased for my grandson & he loves it. We keep it in the car so as we are traveling he gets to practice reading - without even realizing it- The facts and photos are really interesting & random - covering all types of subjects. Plus we are all learning new info

As with so many civilizations, ancient and modern, the history of the Assyrian civilization is written in blood. The book describes the start, rise and fall of their civilization which started around 2660 BCE. There is not much evidence about the earliest period, though.One of the techniques they used in conquered territories was to displace people to other locations which helped break up the cohesion of those areas and lessen the chance they would revolt. The Assyrian empire went through periods of growth and collapse. They could also, at times, be extremely violent especially in what they did to kings who opposed them (kill the king, flay his skin and then put the remains on display.)The book discusses the Assyrian government, military, daily life, the various classes of citizens, their art, math, science and religion. There is also a bibliography.It's a well-done about about a civilization that lived and died by the sword, literally.

Amazing book covering a great ancient civilization & empire! I was familiar with with the Assyrians from the Bible. One of the best military forces in ancient world . Very ruthless in battles except for the time a certain angel took care of 185,000 soldiers . Their customs & all phases of life is covered in this book. Just super book on all that took place in Mesopotamia.Wonderful book in the Captivating History Series!

So far I am part of the way through the book and I love history and I'm learning a lot that I haven't known about this era and our history. Some parts read lucky history book like from school but again I love history and it's very informative and I can't wait to finish the book and go on to reading other books from captivating history. I would recommend this to anyone who loves history or who just wants to learn new things about our past.

Imagine a horrible book report by a sixth grader who did not read the book, vague generalizations without any substantive history or narrative. Just beyond horrid and a complete waste of time. The only redeeming thing about it it that it is short so if you ignore my advice and finish it, you won’t have wasted too much time.

I like this one,before I read this book pretty much all I knew about the Assyrians was what I read in the Bible. Now thanks to this book I know much more about them. This book goes into detail about them, they were an aggressive nation, as the book states they needed to expand to survive.

When I read Palestine I got turned off. There was not such a place in Assyrian times until the Roman onslaught about 1200 years later. Otherwise, the book style feels like an intro into Ancient History for the 7th grader. Which might be a targeted audience. So 3 stars

I loved the very detailed way the topic was covered! I usually get lost within dates and facts. Although that Information was given, I was able to use the maps and anecdotes provided to gain a real picture of the scale and orientation of the empire's growth and decline.

For the Love: Fighting for Grace in a World of Impossible Standards is a fun stream-of-consciousness roller coaster ride through the rants and raves of a Jesus-loving, preacher's wife and mother-of-5, sprinkled with a little minor celebrity glitz. It is, therefore, not what I expected.The book is truly funny, easy to read in small snatches and occasionally makes a great point of practical theology. (“If you can make a pot of chili and use a cell phone, then you can create community.” Or, “Anytime the rich and poor combine, we should listen to whoever has the least power.”) However, it is not what I expected because the title suckered me. I thought it was going to be a straight-up education about grace applied to ourselves primarily and others secondarily, something we all sorely need, whether we are coming from the get-your-life-in-line end of the spectrum or the let-it-all-hang-out end. But it's not. After the wonderful Introduction, grace is never directly addressed again, and there are whole chapters which don't even use the word. There IS a chapter on fashion, multiple chapters addressing pet peeves, Jen's life in Facebook posts and several intricate recipes. Yes, there are a couple more serious chapters about missions (seemingly borrowed from When Helping Hurts) and church leaders, but there is approximately one Bible reference (ok, I found three more in the second-to-last, confusing chapter encouraging women to lead more) and for a book touting grace, I felt kind of ragged on a few times.I could be the author's mother (if I'd had a couple rough and/or promiscuous teen years), so there's one other thing I've got to say: sometimes this good-hearted lady knows not of what she speaks. By her own admission she hasn't been through a lot of hardships. She has a loving pastor-husband, five great kids who are still at home, and she and her friends cheer on one another's published books, released CD's and popular podcasts. Talk to me again when there's only one of you working on your marriage, when your grown child has embraced atheism, when you've had a significant part of your body disfigured, or when your best friend or your dreams have died a slow death. Then you can write a serious book aimed at lifting burdens, explaining modern dilemmas or applying grace to self-condemnation. Until then, please adhere to truth in advertising by subtitling your book: Funny Blogs about Being a Middle-aged Christian Mom.Please buy this book (seriously, do) if you want to read some light yet inspiring Christian humor. Just don't be fooled by the title like I was. And, Jen, when you decide to write the book you promised in the Introduction, I'll stand in line for it.

Hatmaker is hilarious, peppering jokes between tear jerker odes to her loved ones, community, and Jesus. The chapter about "Callings" by itself makes it worth it to get the book. She also fills an important hole in common Christian writing - she talks about grace, but also addresses the need for people to leave abusive and toxic relationships. She also frankly addresses modern problems in the church, such as homophobia, science-aversion, and unnecessary dogmatism. It's a good book! I have to whine about something though. I was personally quite miffed by the bits on cooking. She has a little speel about how "we" do have time to cook healthy meals, mixed in with a mockery of advertisements for fast food and packaged food. Then she follows it up with a recipe that requires two hours in the oven. I remembered that Hatmaker does not work a nine to five job like most of us and, suddenly, that comment made sense. If I tried that, husband and I would be eating dinner at 8:45 P.M. Correction, I would be crying from hunger by 7:15 P.M. and husband would have bought us burgers by 7:20 P.M. I was very much enjoying the book but was very disheartened by the way she talked about food as some kind of relationship glue. I grew up with and live with people who just don't care that much about food - investing extra time and money into food would mean disappointment and a slimmer budget for me. I know because I've tried; I had to change my standards about food to "Well, they are easily pleased. That's a blessing." I think I was so bothered by the comments because the rest of the book is such a good representation of finding acceptance and satisfaction. Cooking is such a sore subject for so many women and I wish Hatmaker had been a little gentler with it. Anyway, she is a good writer and the book is encouraging and thoughtful on the whole.

The best of Jen Hatmaker to date, in my opinion. She makes me laugh so hard, I cry. Her stories are so real and encouraging. Her approach to loving her family, friends, and the disenfranchised people around her is what I believe God expects from all Christ followers. Her approach is Grace based, which is where God has been leading me to focus. After 40 years as a Southern Baptist, married to a minister, the daughter of a staff member, and myself a pianist/organist, the judgmental, political leanings of the denomination has become more and more disgusting to me. Jen's thoughts and scripture references help me pray through what path God is leading me down as I try to love people unconditionally.

This book is more a monologue of Jen Hatmaker's life. A whole chapter devoted to whether leggings are pants? I quit half way through. This wasn't about enriching my relationship with the Lord as much as stand up comedy from her life. Disappointed.

Save your money! This book is a mere compilation of Jenn Hatmakers opinions on other Christians, while using quick witted and back handed one liners. It's ALL OVER THE PLACE. Definitely not a study or anything. The title is misleading, it's not about finding grace at all! If you want my copy, feel free to reach out, I'm looking to get rid of mine, or perhaps I'll just toss it.

This is an excellent look at President Theodore Roosevelt, written for a child's understanding. My 6 year old grandson is consumed with learning about our presidents and, by extrapolation, the entire governmental system. (Oh, dear!) Although he can't read it all by himself, he loves to be read to.I would highly recommend it.

Great book took several days longer to receive than expected

This book hits all of the highlights of Teddy Roosevelt's amazing life. It is written in a manner that second graders could comprehend it, if they are read to. Third grade on up can read independently. It was an interesting book for adults, as well as kids. We used it for a report and were pleased. (Be sure to note that it is less than 50 pages.)

I purchased several of the Time Life For Kids books and they are great. I have 9-year-old twin boys who are in 4th grade, and they love them! I would strongly suggest these books for any children who are interested in learning more about a specific legend or if learning about a specific legend is required for class work, book reports, etc.Great price too!

I like data. Decent data will lead us to the global solutions we must find or perish. But the author rips apart other versions of utopia, while extolling a democratic socialist view. He seems to forget that democracy, by its very definition, must include the voices of the autocratic, the greedy, the tricky, criminal mind, void of care for others. Humans embody the qualities he needs for a truly democratic society, but they also embody those attributes diametrically opposed. He does not address this fundamental,entail stumbling block to his vision. That is a terrible failure. Marx didn’t get it right because he took sound analysis and turned it into a religion that no longer describes ground truth. The proletariat are just as human as the elites. When they rule, it gets ugly fast.

A thought-provoking critique of green politics from a progressive point of view. The author, a leftist activist, makes the case that progressive ideals require continued material and economic progress to enable greater human flourishing. He decries the anti-growth orthodoxies of green advocates, arguing that their back to nature policies would lead to population collapse, widespread immiseration, and authoritarianism. In his view, only continued scientific and technical advances will allow us to solve the problems of pollution and global warming. He makes the compelling point, that in the case of global warming in particular, we have already released so much greenhouse gas, that if we stopped all emissions tomorrow and converted instantly to a popular model of a "green" society (essentially a19th century rural economy), global warming would continue for another two centuries or more, and so we would reap all the costs of climate change without having the means to mitigate them. In the end, he argues, there is no road back to some idealized natural past - we have no viable choice but to be smart, and modern, and green, and work our way out of the problems we have created.

Interesting read. Good mental floss for local food advocates.

Phillips provides one of the few voices to outline what I call a "climate-stabilized modernity". Today we have denialists on the right, and on the left many who would seek to undermine modern society altogether. In contrast Phillips calls for a centrist and democratic activism designed to maintain and extend the best of civilization, while rapidly installing the infrastructure of a post-carbon world.His use of the "democratically planned economy" concept needs study and perhaps revision. Intensively planned economics can become stifling, but that is not to say governments cannot or should not attempt to tailor market activities to foster low-carbon outcomes. Definitely a nexus for vigorous debate.Overall an important addition to the literature related to climate action. Highly recommended.

Phillips does an excellent job of critiquing the hair shirt Malthusian Green Austerity that has come to dominate the environmental movement. In a breezy yet well researched style, Phillips challenges the conventional wisdom that the standard of living of the working classes of the developed world have to be slashed to "save the planet". He also calls for the left to return to it's pro growth and pro progress roots. Well worth reading

(Review has been edited by a less frenzied, chagrined reviewer who wrote one in complete haste). Zero Books goes into murky territory, publishes Occupado-style primer that careens from left to center and back again, but is a strong polemic. Phillips has serious social science chops, but seems to be in the dreamy phase where all of humanity's problems can be managed to a wonderful betterment.Although the book initially enraged me, with its highly debatable assertion that humans have marvelous control over their political economy, and has some deeply disturbing tendencies to the "ecomodernist" Breakthrough Institute greenwashers, Phillips has the gift of courage and dedication, and he skewers much of the Jensenite ilk with panache. Phillips is not a righty, he is not a greenwasher, as I charged before, and he takes on extremely relevant and serious topics with verve, so he should be read widely with appreciation and engagement, as kind of a more cantankerous and political Ozzie Zehner. I am happy to have bought the book, despite my enduring disagreement.
