Be forewarned...this book is not for everyone. I love the fact that this book provided me with the vibe of the French and Creole history in Louisiana during those days. But other than that, this book (the story line, and the author's writing style) really wasn't for me. When the author mentioned dysfunctional family and extramarital affairs... she really meant a CRAZY historical version of your modern day soap opera. SPOILER ALERT: We've got brother-in-law sleeping with their sister-in-law. Cases of "What you mean you're not my Daddy?"--I know the author did this because she wanted to stick as close to the Historic truth as possible...but a lot of people don't care for a cheating hero (no matter how b**chy his current wife is). I'm also not a fan of the author's writing technique. I know she tried using the fast forwarding method where each new chapter picks up in the aftermath of the previous chapter's cliffhanger...but when she did that for years of fast forwarding, it confuses the reader, and left major plot holes. For example, the book started out with baby Abigail being six, then we don't hear anymore mention of her for a while, when she's finally mention again the girl is suddenly she's 15 yrs old. The author had too much going on and didn't follow through on certain characters' story. Like poor baby Gorèe...(ANOTHER SPOILER) we never found out who hurt/raped the little girl that night she was lured to the alcove. And don't get me started on the ending...The author is seriously leaving us hanging with the unsure future of Pierre's twin daughters?? “De dark neba choose yo maddum. But her choose de dark. Now I give her to de dark for de dark to do whateba it wants to her...What she stole be de Debbil’s forbidden lily." Seriously??? Needlessly to say, with an ending like that, this is one very unsatisfied reader.As you can see from other reviews here, some people actually deemed this book 5 stars ( I guess to each their own). If you don't mind a cheating hero, messy formatting, and crazy family drama...then take your chance with this book, as I did (even though it fell short).
I have loved everything else I've read from Ms. Young. I was very excited to read this since I love historical fiction.Ms. Young did an excellent job writing a piece of historical fiction rich in detail. I wasn't familiar with this place and time period and learned a lot. The characters were interesting and quite complex- and at times quite devious. This is a well detailed family saga.I am only giving it 3 stars because it desperately needs a good editing. The book consistently has grammatical errors, misspelled words and typos throughout all 600+ pages. There is inadequate spacing between paragraphs when switching POVs which was very confusing for me at times.There were a few times I considered giving up on the book because of the poor editing- it really affected my ability to delve deep into the story and enjoy it as much as I could have. I'm glad I kept at it because it is really a very interesting story. It has a lot of potential- it just needs a good edit.
This book was a history lesson as well as a thrilling page turner. I really enjoyed the Forbidden Lily and would look forward to reading more about the Jenning family saga there is more to be told about this loving and supportive family. So much more of life that needs to be told.
This was a great captivating read. I wish there was a part 2 that tells what happens to the reins and next generation oh Jennings. Please give it some consideration.. enjoyed reading this book and will def recommend.
S, cruelty,triumph, and anything else one can think of. I highly recommend this book to everyone. I will now look for another book written by Shelley Young. I am anticipating another wonderful and well written book.
I loved everything about this book....A must read. My first book that I read from Shelly loved it!!

Excellent story, held my attention to the very end. Expressly enjoyed the historical facts that were presented in the book.
