Review

"...Webster's powerfully written Snow in the Kingdom escapes being swallowed in the [Everest] deluge ... is meticulously researched and emotionally charged." -- Rock & Ice Magazine, Feb/March, 2001"Emotionally charged ... (the book is) an examination of Webster's soul, rather than a simple story of a great climb." -- Joe Simpson, High Mountain Sports, England, December 2001"Engrossing and detailed writing, candid introspection, generous color photography ... It belongs on the shelf among the great annals of mountain literature." -- Don Mellor, GORP.com, May 10, 2001"Much more than a climbing book, Snow In The Kingdom is about the making of a man. [Reading] the do-or-die summit push it was impossible to put the book down." -- Thom Pollard, EverestNews.com, May 17, 2001"Snow in the Kingdom dazzles the eye as much as the imagination ... Heroic, upbeat, and powerful." -- Midwest Book Review, October 2001"This miraculous account of struggle and survival rivets the reader to discover what the fate of these friends will be." -- Rain Taxi literary review, Autumn, 2001"Webster's most intriguing claim is that seven-year-old Tenzing Norgay may have met George Mallory ... whose body was discovered last year." -- The Observer, London, Dec. 24, 2000"the strongest [book] of its sort since Touching the Void. Perhaps a closer comparison is HerzogÂ’s Annapurna." -- SECOND PLACE Winner, 2001 Boardman-Tasker Mountain Literature Prize, London.FINALIST, Mountain Literature catagory -- 2001 Banff Mountain Book Festival, Banff, Canada

I loved this book. I will never climb a rock or a mountain and I hate being cold. But this tale of why and how extreme climbers and mountaineers undertake the challenges that take them to very edge of life was compelling, inspiring and beautiful. Webster's chronology, which starts well before his first Himalayan experience sets the stage and is almost as interesting as his description of the Kangshung/ Neverest climb. This story highlights so many lessons for life: the importance of working with people that you truly trust, achieving agreement not only on the shared goals but on ethics and values, making a team stronger than the sum of its parts, and knowing when to push forward at all costs ...and when to retreat. Webster's reflections on how these extreme experiences affect and change people are thought provoking. Most interestingly, when you read or watch other accounts of this expedition (and you will want to, the story is that riveting) you will find that there is no disagreement among the team-members as to how things happened. They may emphasize different parts of the story, but they seem to give credit where credit is due, and that may also be unique in the annals of mountaineering literature. That is another testament to the integrity of the members of this team, and to Webster's retelling of their adventure. So while this book is a page-turner, it is also fodder for reflection about what is important in one's own life. And finally, the photos are fantastic. Although they can be enlarged in the kindle edition, I think I might be purchasing the hardbound edition to really see this photos as they should be seen.

This is an amazing and impressive book. It is filled with excellent breathtaking photographs, both black and white and in color. Mr. Webster writes in a very straight-forward open style which makes it a pleasure to read. The accounts are truly awe inspiring and Mr. Webster expresses his personal experiences and the overwhelming beauty and majesty of the Everest area so well it really brings it to life. The book itself is extremely well produced and the pages, binding, and photographic reproduction is outstanding. I am totally impressed by this book and that is something coming from a die hard bibliophile!

Snow in the Kingdom: My Storm Years on EverestEd WebsterI recently finished this massive tome while on vacation in NY's Adirondack Mountains. I use the word "massive" deliberately since despite its normal physical dimensions, "Snow in the Kingdom" is printed on such heavy paper that it felt like a brick in my hands and actually bothered me when I tried to read in bed with the book propped up on my stomach. This isn't a complaint - I like a book that imposes a definite physical presence."Snow in the Kingdom" falls into what I call the "introspective" category of climbing book where we find out as much about the author's personal feelings, motivations, and the inner dialog in his or her head as we do about the mechanics of various climbs and expeditions. Similar examples include Rebuffat's "Starlight and Storm" and Royal Robbins' recent "To Be Brave". The very subtitle, "My Storm Years on Everest", reflects this.Could this volume have used an editor? Perhaps, but when push comes to shove, I vastly prefer the true and idiosyncratic product of an actual individual human mind as opposed to the vapid ghost written crap that comprises so much of today's autobiography. Ed Webster definitely gives us the former. Oh, and as others have mentioned, tons of great photographs.Recommended to anyone interested in Everest, Himalayan climbing, or the inner motivations that lead people to climb.

This is an incredible book! I 100% highly recommend it. It's so very well written and he provides pictures almost at every turn of the page! I love seeing pictures of the people and places being written about.... Your imagination comes to life.... Right there on the pages! It almost takes you there. Since I am now unable to climb due to several back surgeries, I lived vicariously through this book. Thank you for such a jewel. I've read tons of Himalayan and high altitude climbing books..... This one has risen to the top spot of my favorites.
