The book is really interesting, I remember reading back in middle school and decided to buy it for some memories and a great storyline of love and a world to its ending

I read this book as a recommendation from a friend to see what she felt was a good example of young adult reading. I liked the book, and read it through as a fall asleep read. It is a young adult book so designed for a much younger audience. Published in 1998, it is not too dated but didn't carry my desire for nostalgia. It never felt like the late nineties nor is it current. The two teenagers take turns talking in the first person literally alternating chapters which the author conveniently titled with their respective names, Jeb and Marine. The fourteen-year-olds never spoke out loud or to themselves, with the voices I expect in that age group then or now. They were too introspective and adult in some of their thinking. It almost felt like this is how an adult thinks a young teen thinks. Admittedly it is hard to get into a fourteen-year-old's head.If you are very religious, you may find the cult content to be too much. If you are not religious, you may find the subject overwhelmed with the cult perspectives. Either way, if you have strong beliefs that you wish to present to your teen, you should think about pre-reading this book.

The topic of religious/millennial cults is a sensitive one. In the hands of less gifted writers, there would be a dangerous tendency toward the maudlin and the strident; and while this would be disaster enough in an adult audience novel, it would truly be unforgiveable in a book aimed at young adults. Not a problem at all here though; authors Yolen and Coville know exactly what they are doing and how to precisely say what needs saying without the least overstatement or soggy sentiment. As one who teaches composition, I marvel at these two and their ability to always find just the right word, phrase, sentence or paragraph; this novel would serve well as a model of precise and concise writing. And what a grand story! Two typical, but oh-so-slightly outre teens find each other and incipient romance while waiting for the end of the world on a mountaintop in Massachusetts. The characterization is superb as always with Yolen and Colville. Ms. Yolen familiarly exercises her virtuoso range from picture books like the powerful SKY DOGS to the enchanted witchery of BRIAR ROSE to the witty fun of WIZARD HALL and so much inbetween; while Mr. Coville here tries his hand (entirely successfully) at a slightly older audience than his usual, but so very exquisite MY TEACHER IS AN ALIEN and JEREMY THATCHER, DRAGON HATCHER (this writer's favorite!). This present book combines their celestial talents sublimely. While fans of both will not be disappointed here, this engrossing page-turner has so much to offer not only young adults, but their longing-for-a good-read parental units as well. Yolen and Coville: More please!

The plot follows two teenagers, Jed and Marina, as their parents drag them into a millennium cult known as The Believers as they prepare for the world to end on July 27th. The Believers, led by a reverand from Boston, decide to camp on a mountaintop in western Massachusetts where they believe they will be saved from the end of the world. The story is told in alternating voices between Jed and Marina who meet on the mountain and consequently fall in love. Neither teenager believes in the mission of The Believers but they both follow their parents in order to protect them and their siblings. Many may not view this work as a distopian novel because it is set in present day and does not have any fantasy or science fiction elements. However, it is perhaps scarier than the "traditional" distopian works because it is set in the present day and concerns a social issue that could easily arise within our lifetime. What makes this book a distopian novel are The Believers who remove themselves from conventional society in order to build their own distopian civilization at the top of the mountain. As is with all distopian societies, The Believers come to a tragic and brutal end. Though the reader can see something horrific approaching on the horizon, the ending is still a surprise. Many adult readers may disregard this book because it is marketed to young adults. However, I found the novel to be an excellent read for all ages. There is, of course, a young romance between the two main characters that can be annoying at times but the majority of the book focuses on The Believers' rise and fall as a society which is extremely fascinating. I would recommend this work to any person interested in dystopian literature regardless of age.
