First, I think video’s are the better method to improve your overall game … narrated videos beat a thousand words. However, this book has value as a reference source. If you start to notice a pattern in missed shots (skipping short of the wall, fault serves, self-practice becoming less effective, getting trapped, etc) this book has the features for diagnosing your “Problem” and it’s “Corrective Action”. The book iteratively progresses the reader through every fundamental from beginner, intermediate and advanced for each topical reference. The book is a great game diagnostic reference. Once you ‘diagnose’ you can concentrate on videos. As an example I’d specifically fallen I started skipping returns consistently. I diagnosed my bad habit to my racquet grip morphing into a baseball bat grip. The first or second chapter of the book illustrated the bad habit I’d developed and sent me back to ‘relearn’ and commit to re-establish the muscle memory of the trigger finger, handshake grip. Simple stuff like this is what you can diagnose from the book.4 star = “I like it”. Videos are more revealing for your total game strategy but you need to diagnose your foible.

I found the book well-organized and structured overall, but the biggest problem with the book is the instructions on swing and stance are often confusing or unclear. For instance, in the section on forehand, it says for the intermediate level that the "Hips are slightly rotated, pointing to the right front corner, to add power to your stroke." Pointed to what? Do they mean your hips face the right front corner? Or do they mean that the line of your hips going sideways points at the right front corner? For the advanced stance, it gets more confusing and says that the "Hips are completely rotated, 6 inches to 1 foot (15 to 30 cm) beyond the right corner to obtain maximum power--you coil then uncoil." Again, beyond what reference? This is compounded by the lack of enough photographs (from different views) to show the concepts they are trying to convey. I've read a fair amount of sports instruction books. Some of the better ones will show views from front, side, top for each position. Here, there's only one photo each for the intermediate and advanced stance. And there are no diagrams showing the stance in relation to the overall court (which would explain the corner instruction).During the swing phase, there are also not enough photos throughout the swing.Overall, the book was probably perfectly understandable to the instructors or those that have taken their lessons, as it is reinforcing the concepts that are demonstrated. But for someone that hasn't been exposed to their methodology, there are several key points that are not explained clearly. After purchasing the book, I noted that several of the reviewers seem to have taken a course from the two authors. The book's tips are probably great as a refresher, but they don't really succeed in conveying the concepts to those that have not taken their courses / lessons. The instructors seem well respected in their field. I ended up tracking down several YouTube videos by others that convey most of their points, and do so in a more-graphical and clear way.

Well, what can one say? There's only so much 'there there' and none of this is a secret. But as far as any text material can contribute to an understanding of what one needs to do to obtain proficiency in this sport, this text is probably about as good as any out there. It's kind of hard to go wrong with Fran Davis' instruction, and although I am definitely NOT a fan of the meditative 'imaging' school of 'sports Woo', it's very hard to argue with her success. One can read this text and see its application in every serve by Paola Longoria! One may benefit from that focus or not as one sees fit, but it certainly does NOT detract from an excellent text on how to proceed to better levels of quality in execution of basic racquetball play. This text is one that's worth every penny spent on it. No book can make one a better player. That needs potential, discipline and hard work. But this text can help to make those more effectively and efficiently used to that end. Highly recommended!

I was impressed with the level of detail and updated information in this book. It has helped add power and consistence to my game. This book is not for the beginner or experienced player who is not willing to analytize or improve their mechanics. There should be more photos and videos to help solidifying some parts of the material. If you're a good player and want to get better, this book is for you. If you're a player that only plays recaqurtball and doesn't practice (drills, mechanics) then Save your money. No one gets better just playing on challenge court night. The author takes the time to provide information for a intermediate and advance level player. For example the intermediate level player is should correct foot work and swing mechanics, where the advance area may discuss more hip and shoulder rotation with a longer step and getting closer to the ground. With that being said, if you're a C player, this book can help you transition to a B or A player and not expect you to jump straight to open.
